Pass Around Aylsworth Apex

It's... alive!
The razors are with me guys and arrived yesterday morning. However, my wife passed away unexpectedly yesterday morning so, as you can imagine, my head has been elsewhere over the last 48 hours. I’ll update the thread once I’ve had chance to try them (which may not be for a few days).
Sincere condolences.

My sincere condolences, Andy. My thoughts are with you.

As life has slowly started to move towards a new normal for me, I’ve felt able to start testing the razors.

So far, I’ve used the stainless steel razor (after many attempts to try and get the handle to tighten onto the baseplate) on a couple of occasions. On each occasion it felt very draggy on my face and I was only able to fully realise why when head shaving.

I could feel the blade moving independently in the head despite the handle feeling tight on the baseplate. I suspect that this is due to the thread issue and not being able to apply enough torque to the baseplate to allow the head to fully clamp the blade. It’s a shame as it feels as though it could be a very nice razor.

I’ll put the aluminum razor to the test this week and report back accordingly.

I'd suggest giving the steel head a go with a different steel handle. It's what I did and it worked well enough for me.

Thanks for the tip. I wasn’t sure if the thread issue was caused by the handle or the top cap thread and didn’t want to chance it. I’ll give it a try with another handle and see how it goes.

I’ve tried the stainless razor with a different handle and whilst it did improve things a tad (especially when head shaving) the razor still felt a bit draggy to me and didn’t have the suction effect I’ve grown to like in draggier razors such as the Blackbird.

It’s a nice enough razor. but, unfortunately, is not up there with the best in my collection.

I’ll be giving the aluminium version a try tonight and am looking forward to seeing how it performs.

When the razors are back with me the S/S (head) one will be PIF’d to a participant of the passaround.
I’ll do a list then, those who wish to take part can add their name.

I shaved with the aluminum razor for the last time this evening and must admit that it has started to grow on me.

The razor is very well made with very precise tolerances and feels a perfect fit for my hands.

I enjoyed the efficiency of the razor and liked the fact that it does not have any noticeable blade feel (which is a good thing in my book).

Where it doesn’t shine, for me, is ithe level of drag which I found to be pretty much on par with the stainless steel version.

The question, though, is whether I would purchase the aluminum razor. If you asked me this a few days ago the answer would be a resounding no. However, I’m a sucker for aluminium razors and this one has grown on me to the extent that I most probably will end up purchasing one.

Many thanks to @Holyzeus and @Aylsworth Razors for organising this pass around. I’ve truly enjoyed trying these razors out. 🙂
