Any pure EV owners here?

Less than a year old, not sure of the model, possibly a Scenic. I have looked into this and the reversing sounds have been designed by Jean Michel Jarre for the Scenic, as standard there is a low level hum. If the car was making a hum then I never heard it, understandable when there is other traffic noise.

By contrast, my neighbour has a hybrid Toyota and that sounds damn awful in reverse, like an electric drill where the speed is adjustable on the trigger but at the slowest possible speed, far worse than a Scalextric.

I presume it also has a reversing camera as it’s not a cheap car? I’ve found them remarkably good at avoiding running-over people!

Electric cars are supposed to emit a low level noise when driving below 20 kph including reversing (called Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS)) this applies to any EV or hybrid registered from July 2021.

How old is his car?

Mine appears silent Paul, i certainly can’t hear it from within. I’ve tried Google, the manual and all the menus. I can’t find anything. I do want it to emit something.

I have just made her get out while i reversed, definitely doesn’t make a sound.

Well bizarrely this morning it emitted a sound whilst reversing onto the drive.

I think this must be a common problem, there is a Skoda dealer in Yorkshire who tells his customers that when reversing they should wind the window down and shout Aye Up.

Are you sure about that? It’s a legal requirement.

They might have saved costs and only put a speaker at the front (this would be legal if it still meets the volume level despite it being difficult to hear at the rear)

AVAS is a legal requirement fore and back to 12mph and be up to 70db, the noise can be random. I think on a Mini for example you can choose a big block Ford. Cars must not have a pause or switch off device.

I mentioned earlier, a near neighbour was backing up his Renault out of his drive and I heard nothing, I walked into the side of his car, perhaps outside the view of a rear view camera.

Another neighbours car has a reversing noise that sounds like a worn out gearbox, must be deliberate given that it is automatic.
