I entertain another hobby, flyfishing, and we see the same thing each season also.
New rods launched with new innovative technology rendering last seasons gear obsolete, all designed to gain another few quid from us users.
Im new to this kind of shaving but the comparisons with “gear” is there to see.
Stick to what you know and love, will the shave be better using these new bases, maybe, but it wont be by an awful lot i think.

I've always fancied the idea of an artisan playing a trick and saying they've released a super duper new base, the best of the best, and people go crazy over it. Months later he reveals it's exactly the same as the old base. I do wonder if the placebo effect is in place sometimes.

Mixed feelings here. I've tried 3 WK soap samples in the past and the scents were pretty horrible to my nose or "horse poop" as @RandySp would say. King of Oud was the only "somewhat acceptable" one, Man from Mayfair was bad and Merchant of Tobacco is probably the worst scent I have ever smelled. So in that regard I'm not very eager to experiment with their scents again. I could go for the unscented one, but 50% of the joy of shaving is caused by the soap scent for me, so not too sure about that either...

This is why I'm not touching it - dodgy scents. If you thought that Merchant of Tobacco was bad you should have smelt their coconut one...

I didn't think Merchant of Tobacco was bad, but it wasn't what I expected from the name. It was more like the Merchant of Cherry Chocolate who ran out of Tobacco, but nevertheless, it was a pleasant smell for my nose.

All these scents are available pre mixed for use in soap on lots of soap making sites. As I'm dabbling in soap making I now know where to get almost any scent mix I want. They are all there in as large a quantity as you like. Aventus, One Million, Leather, Suede, Florals, you name it, it's all on the shelf ready to pour into your soap base.
I literally can buy anything.
A great bath/hand soap recipe contains Water, Olive Oil, Sunflower Oil, Coconut oil, Coconut butter and Sodium Hydroxide. That's it, you don't need anything else then simply buy your fragrance oil and bung it in. The only problem encountered is if a frag oil accellerates the firming of the soap batter but if it is uncoloured and you don't want fancy swirls like shave soap and such just mix it in at the last minute and pour it into your mould.
Don't get caught out on scents, they aren't fragrances and won't last. There is a lot to be said for unscented soaps but that means you only have one soap to sell. Labels sell soap.

I will give the unscented a try since I used unscented soaps 99% of the time. Anytime an artisan releases an unscented I pick one up to try and encourage them to continue to stock them. For the longest time there were hardly any premium bases offered in unscented formulation and most of the artisans I inquired with said they just don’t sell. Having an assortment of GD bases, as well as Milksteak in unscented is like it hit the lottery. The WK tallow/ donkey soap I have is a great base but while the skin conditioning was good I found the slickness lacking. I look forward to trying the new base in unscented and hopefully it dials things up a notch.

It's hard for me to imagine that anything could be better than the WK buffala base
I have read that it is really fantastic. Unfortunately when I reached out to WK and inquired about Bufala in unscented I was told it would not be released in unscented. I believe one of the forums or FB groups maybe had a small run of unscented Bufala but that was a limited one time thing.

The slickness indeed wasn't the best but maybe we must load more soap and give it more water. But Wholly reacts different when you add too much water. It breaks down.

For those of you who are curious about which Siero soaps will initially be released and when, here's the release schedule taken straight from the Wholly Kaw website.

Maggards told in the newsletter that will stock Siero on 15th November. Let's see. I don't like the price though. In contrary with the Milksteak that starts from 16$, this thing begins with 26$. Damn that's expensive.
