So Moon on the left and a bright star on right, very bright in fact. Tonight’s sky and approx on a North West direction ? The lower brighter one.

No star at all. Venus.
The star top right is Capella.

The reason is geometry.
The current positions of Sun, Earth and Venus are such that Venus is well-lit by the sun when seen from earth, to say it simply.

Slightly off topic, but close enough. We bought our granddaughter a quality telescope for her 8th birthday in February, which she’d asked for. She has really dived into star gazing and has read several books on it,etc. and searches the heavens regularly A couple of weeks ago she got her mother out of bed at 4.00 am to view some celestial phenomenon she’d read about. We hope her enthusiasm continues.

Try the Skyview Lite app. Others may have better suggestions.

Edit - I do find Venus tends to be a tad brighter after a bottle of good Rioja but the app helps.

I’ll have a look at that. I know these things change over time and sometimes these cycles of events don’t happen that often. I did see someone saying the Elon Musk is filling the sky with satellite, so an app would be good to weed them out.

LOL !!! Funny you say that I thought at first I was eyeing things after a beer. Where I sit on the sofa we have a Juliet Balcony, two big full length doors on the first floor. I looked, opened the window and looked, then got someone else to look.
