How is water getting in, in the first place? Have you checked for rust?
The car is a VW convertible. Older convertibles such as the MGB used to have a flap on the hood which directed the rainwater outside the car, Karmann build the car for VW and the design allows water to go into the car and out of the drain holes.

There is also a known fault with vents behind the rear bumper which allow water from the road to gather in the spare wheel well and that finds its way into the car.,

The wheel well had about four litres of water, surprisingly clean water. No sign of rust to the body or the spare wheel.

There is a German specialist seller of these cars and they say that 90% of the cars that come to them have damp carpets, some have problems under the rear seat too..

The cause is guesswork on my part and seeing what others have done to fix the problem, to do things properly means removing the rear bumper and as long as the problem has gone away then I am hoping that chore will not be necessary.

The puzzle to me is that the water looked new and clean, both from the sills and the wheel well. The car is 11 years old now, no idea as to how long this has been building up.

Interesting design issues. I’ve a 2005 BMW Z4 soft-top convertible and I hope it doesn’t have similar issues. I’ve not heard of any issues, but I’ve never specifically looked into it. No wetness on the floor that I’ve noticed…fingers crossed.

PS For our North American friends sills are rocker panels.

There are reported issues in the Z4. I seldom use the VW but Mrs Vac said that she has heard water sloshing about under braking.

Madam didn't say anything, I only noticed a problem when I saw tiny toadstools growing on the carpet, then I felt the wet carpet on the passenger side rear footwell, then the wheel well.

Oh, oh I’ll have to have the convertible top drain holes checked when I have the car for service in May. I haven’t heard any water sloshing about. Thanks for the link. I watched the video on accessing the drain holes and that’s a job well above my pay grade.

Last evening, Cindy and I watched the low-budget movie "The Station Agent" from 2003.
Enjoyed it greatly. No real plot, just ordinary people humorously finding their way in life in face of normal adversities.
It is always nice, and rare, to find a well-done movie that doesn't lean on sex, violence, whiz-bang special effects, or sadness.
Just good story writing, good acting, and good directing.
Recommended.
