Vintage Gillette Shave

Not everyone went to the barber for a shave with a straight razor, plenty did it themselves at home. All Gillette did was to make it easier to shave. Most people would take the easier route in any task if given a choice and the results were similar. A person proficient with a straight razor could shave themselves in not much more time than with using a DE.

I base my opinion in the fact that blade holders in 1915 were less forgiving than in 1959.

I don't have any vintage guitars (only copies of 'em) but if I did have any, I'd play the hell out of 'em.
I would not disagree on that point. The head design on Gillette DEs has changed over the years with the original ones designed for use with a thicker DE blade then in production. With the introduction of the thinner blades that are familiar today, I have no doubt the head designs also changed. I think the Gillette DEs I have that were intended to use the thicker blades would be milder shaving if I were to use the thicker blade in them.
Also, I believe, that as more and more people began their shaving careers on DEs the hard learned lessons of the importance of using the right angle, a light touch and a good well hydrated/slick lather became a bit of a lost art. You can get away with a lot using a modern DE that you couldn't with a straight razor. The same sort of thing happens today with the majority of people learning to shave with a cart razor and canned goo and then trying traditional DE shaving.
As razors were improved, they also seemingly required less skill to use in order to make them more popular. I never learned more about shaving than when I learned to use a straight razor proficiently. That alone greatly improved my previous 40 odd years of shaving with a DE going forward.

Please excuse the poor photos as they do not do justice to possibly the most beautiful Gillette DE produced. I found this ABC Pocket Edition King Gillette set many years ago in FB nowhere for very reasonable money. I got it just because I liked the looks and researched it later. The lighting in the photos does not show how good the silver plating is and it is complete. I'm too lazy to polish the tarnish off. I have used it to shave with and the results were OK. The results may have been better had I the original thicker DE blades it was designed for. All the same it did work with the modern thinner blades I used.
