Having had a tyre split I prefer a spare over the tin of goo.

I would too. But there’s not much room in the BMW Z4 to carry a spare, even an inflatable spare like in my Audi Q5. I could, but where would I put groceries, golf clubs, beer, suitcases, etc.? For this very reason, and because my cars are older, my wife and I are members of the Canadian Automobile Association; well worth the money for the peace of mind.

I know what you mean, I used to have an MX-5. Even that had room for a space-saver though.

Here’s what a 18” wheel and low profile tyres can look like. Taken of my car, excuse the wheels, last owner was using them as let’s get close to the kerb as possible aids !!

There simply ain’t enough tyres to help absorb bumps.
