To apply Pre-shave or not

There are two downsides to pre-shave oil: 1) the expense of using something your soap/cream should be handling; 2) the fact that most oils will clog up your razor with oil, stubble, and soap/cream. As long as you remember to loosen the razor heads and really rinse off the crud that's built up, you should have no problems. Or, you could use Panna Crema Nuavia and not worry about it.

I’ve not suffered any clogging problems with the Rocca, though it has decent blade clearance and I rinse it thouroughly and often.
Also, (I do not know if this applies to Proraso) but I have heard, water based creams are less clogging and make less of a mess in the sink, though this makes me question how effectively they remain after applying shaving cream with the brush.

I used pre-shave oil for a number of years (T & H). It seemed to help me quite a bit. A few years ago based on the advice of a member of another shaving forum I tried Jason's Vitamin E oil (5,000 units) and that was a much cheaper solution for me. Now I use pre-shave oil only if I have to shave more than once a day (my beard grows fast and if I shave in the early a.m. I have some stubble by 5:00 p.m.)

I used to apply Proraso green preshave just because I like the scent and the menthol. It doesn’t really add anything to the shave so I didn’t restock when it was done.

It also depends on the soap, with the newer artisans I’ve tried it dosn’t really add anything, but for soaps like Proraso it can be worth playing with.

I like Myrsol Emulsion as pre-shave when I use it.

Finding the same myself.
I know this is the best method, to find what works for me, but this is such a great place to hear from far more experienced members.

I do like the proraso green pre shave cream, but more for the cooling sensation rather than adding extra slickness. I sometimes use Nuage shave oil too, again for the menthol hit.

Same to me regarding 3P. I don't use it in regularly. Sometimes I think it helps, sometimes there seems to be no difference. In the end you will have a go at it and make your own experiences.

I shave every second day. So I use preshave. I have a huge selection now. I have the feeling, that the preshave protects the skin. But I have to let it away for some shaves. Just to be sure.

I’ve found pre-shave oil to be a really useful addition to my arsenal and now rarely shave without it.

I find it does make a noticeable difference. The trick, though, is to thoroughly dry my face after washing with a glycerin soap, before application of one of my thinner oils. This lets the oil absorb into the skin and stops it gunking up the shave.

I’ve also found that thicker oils (such as beard oils) work better when there is 3 or more days stubble present.

The use of a pre-shave oil has enabled me to be able to use some razors that I once considered to be too aggressive without problem.

I’ve stepped away from it while narrowing down my blade preferences and use my Proraso Green as an aftershave soothe.
Once I have my shortlist and my technique has improved I’ll give it another run I think.

If I'm using a soap that is new to me, which is more often than it should be, then I will use a small drop of Razorock Pre Barba. I have no idea what it does, probably a placebo but it is water based so doesn't harm the brush, equipment or sink.
