The routes we take.

I’m sure I’m not alone in this, but I quite often use one route when going somewhere and a different one coming back - whereas there is no way I would swap them over. Obviously some routes make more sense if you have to cross against traffic at a busy junction, say, but I’m not thinking of them. Does anyone else find themselves doing this? If so, have you discovered any logic in your choice? For my own part, I can’t work out why I make certain choices - maybe it’s just an age thing.

I will always try and come back the same way I went unless the satnav tells me otherwise.

What's Satnav? I go where my navigator tells me to and she is pretty good with a map. In town I try to lay out a route that makes getting in and out of the places I want to go to easiest wrt traffic patterns. We usually go to the same places so a pattern gets set that changes little.

I'd regularly go to places and find myself looking for a different route on the way home. An example of which was most recently I was looking at picking up an item from a seller on Gumtree.

He was near to the waymarker on the map and I am at the blue dot. I considered driving via the obvious route across and down and coming back by the ferry across Portaferry-Strangford, then Downpatrick, Crossgar, and so on .
Then I realised it was just going to be a waste of probably 45 mins and £6 on the crossing in order simply satisfy this idle fascination with using a different route on 'the way back'. Nuts. I didn't go in the end.

Absolutely, I frequently drive between Leeds and Bradford in the course of my working day, Always A and B roads going and completely different route on the motorway on the way back. Never the other way around.

Yeah. Very often on regular routes. I do this on my commute because getting out of the T junction would be impossible on the way back. But I also do it on other regular routes but I have no conscious reason why.

Round here you generally have a choice of one decent road or a rutted cart track. I usually use the same route both ways.

I used to travel up towards Maghull & Aintree fairly frequently which, if you don't know, are located on the outskirts of Liverpool and at the end of the M57. Trouble is that the M57 terminates at Switch Island which is a fairly complex and very busy junction. It's made all the more complex by the ridiculously poor standards of the road makings and signage there.

Due to the poor signage and unclear lane markings I often headed home via a different route to the M57. Not on purpose and often accompanied by some pretty robust swearing involving Sefton Council and the Highways Agency.

I commute by train. When I have to take a different route home, that usually means problems, and a longer journey.

When driving to my parents I always take a short cut between two major roads to save a couple of minutes. I rarely go this on the way home. No idea why.

Yes. Some obstacles are only in one direction.

Getting in my office in the morning via A2-A9-A4 is fine. Getting out makes more sense via A10-A2 because it's hard to get on the A4 in the evening rush hour.
