I just had a meeting with my dept chair (that's university speak for supervisor, or gaffer, or what have you). The place is getting quiet as the term has ended, students have scattered, and staff are not far behind. At one point she said "You're Irish- you must know about whisk(e)y, right?" Not wanting to shatter her stereotype I said that I knew a bit about it. She pulled out a litre of Laphraoig that she said someone had just given her earlier in the day, and asked if I was familiar with it. "Yes" I said, "It comes from Skye, one of Scotland's western isles." "Oh", she said, "I thought it was Irish." "Well, you're close. The folk in the western isles are essentially underdeveloped Irish, ma'am" (I couldn't resist). She took out 2 glasses and said we should give it a try. "Absolutely," I agreed. Soon her office was filled with the lovely scent of peat smoke. I toasted her, and threw mine back. She tasted hers, made a stink face, and said "Oh my dear, I don't like that at all." We finished our business, I stood to leave, and she said "Why don't you take this bottle home with you. I'd never drink it." "Well, of course, ma'am, and I'll pour the rest of your glass into the sink on my way out if you like." Like hell I did. I savoured every smoky drop. When I returned to my office my colleague in the next office was still here so I offered him a drink and of course I had one with him. He just left a minute ago, so now I'm sitting here with a fair amount of good whisky coursing through my veins, my office smelling like a turf fire. I've got to stay here at least an hour, I think, as driving drunk isn't nearly as much fun as it used to be.
Happy Christmas!
