The Belgian Coticule

A little bit of information on the above mentioned stash.

I've had the opportunity to bid on three, actually four of the Old Rock coticules found in this basement. Suffice to say that the negotions did not work out for various reasons. I'll stand pat with the stones I've got...

Keep your eyes widely opened, and don't fall for the hype..

Here's an old stone, fairly recently acquired, that I seem to have neglected to photograph and post.
An "Old Rock" in a 4x2 Barber's size. The box and label carry the logo from the Jacques operated mine. There is a lot of confusion and conjecture on what these labels mean. The label carries the signature of S.R. Droescher, not the Jacques name, but it is definitely "Old Rock."
A natural combo, this stone is very fine, very hard and very fast, turning a misty slurry the color of steel with very few strokes. I generally finish with misty slurry on a coticule to obtain a smooth, fluffy shave. The slurry on this one may perhaps need to be a bit heavier.
In any case, I'm very happy to have this stone, and it has alrerady proven to me that it deserves a place in the top tier.

My problem is that I have stones stashed all over the place!

I recently rame across this one that I had forgotten about. I couldn't make out all of the logo on the box. The only thing I could make out, with the aid of a loupe, is "Choice Razor Hone." I have seen these boxes around before, but couldn't find anything in a timely manner, so I sent a note with photo to a recognized expert.. Peter Buhlmann (Hatzicho,) in Germany.
He replied with a very kind note, and a wealth of information. He said it was an S.R, Droescher box, and the center of the logo, which I could not make out, had a stylized SRD. He also told me that this was Old Rock from the Gustave Jacques era, and that the wildly wavy transition was indicative of that.
So, I'm happy to have rediscovered this coticule, and will soon put it through it's paces..

My thanks to Peter for so readily sharing his extensive knowledge. He is a gift to the straight razor/stone community!

The SRD Old Rock ..

So, the stone from the Pennsylvania Coticule Cache mentioned above has arrived. Prominent manganese lines portends a fast stone, and initial tests confirm. I get steel coloring the water within five strokes on plain water only.
A pretty stone..

This is yet another 2x4 Barber's size coticule that I've had for a long time. There is no label and no box, but from everything that I've been able to determine, it fits the description of Deep Rock, although I won't call it that.
I's a fair amount thicker and heavier that other coticules this size, it's got the "Made in Belgium" stamp and a number "48" stamped in the end. It's also a natural combo, although many Deep Rocks were not, so that is not a qualifier, but the myriad striations are.
The BBW side is like no other BBW I have... it looks grainy..
It's a nice stone, and does a great job in I put in the time finishing. It's not particularly hard, and quite slow. I don't favor a coticule this slow, but that's just because I'm a bit impatient. It pops my wife's very fine hair easily.
I like coticules even though they don't photograph well. To truly appreciate them, one must look at the surfaces from many different angles before they reveal their charms... this one, in particular...

This Wacker Old Sheffield was out and ready to go, so it got re-honed. I felt there was more in the edge of this razor, and I hoped my La Grise could find it... And it did. Stunning edge.
This La Grise bout has a story.. It was kindly chosen for me by Bart, the proprietor of coticule.be, on, what I believe was his last trip to Ardennes Coticule to seek stones for members. He filled the wish lists as best he could. I don't recall what I asked for... I didn't know enough at the time, but this is the stone chosen for me.
Unfortunately, photos do not do justice to this stone.. The rose colored veining does not show as stunningly ass in person.

This has been here a long time, and gotten little use... I will now go to it more frequently..
