The Atelier Razor (Aylesworth)

Does anyone have both this razor and the Alpha Spirit in SS? If they do, how do they shave side by side, and which is both the smoothest shave and the most efficient?

I should have said that I do have very strong coarse growth, so getting a close all round finish with many razors is a Challenge.

No was never keen on AC /SE when r hey came out and thought it too expensive for me

In my opinion no. The spirit is milder and more intuitive to use.

I’m only two shaves into the Atelier so it’s too early to commit. However, I prefer my Vector to the Spirit as I find the Spirit a touch too inefficient and like to use it with the Pro Supers.

Tuesday. 30th June.
Today broke off from Atelier sequence, usd Alpha Spirit with SP ( 5 ).
Very easy to use, good blade feel and unlike Shaves with The Atelier I was able to get a nice clean finish around the mouth and chin, Finish on Cheeks excellent. Looks like The Spirit works better on my beard than The Atelier.

Comparing the Atelier, La Faulx, and Amakuni, I would say that in terms of the shave, the LF is probably the most versatile, as you can fine-tune it through the choice of baseplate. The “+” seems to be most people’s sweet spot. Using a guarded blade can make it feel closer to the classic baseplate, while a Pro Super blade can push it up to “++”.

As for the Amakuni, I really wish it were slightly less aggressive. As it stands, I am quite limited in my choice of blades, as anything unguarded requires a very good lather and absolutely no pressure to provide a comfortable shave. I seem to be alone in this opinion, though, as the Tatara team doesn’t appear to have any plans in this regard.

With the Atelier, I was only able to use a Kai guarded blade, period. It is more aggressive than I prefer, without offering any greater efficiency than the other two mentioned above.

If we are talking about maneuverability, Tatara wins hands down, followed by the Atelier and then the LF.

What disappointed me most about the Atelier was how difficult it was to remove the blade after use. Tatara, on the other hand, really did their homework with the cut-outs at the back of the baseplate.

Please take all of this as just one user’s experience. There are many very happy Atelier users out there who would see this very differently.

Is the blade removal as annoying as the Vector? Everytime I'm tempted to try the Vector Lite I remember the pain of changing blades.

Maybe I'll hold out for the Lambda AC instead... or just use my brass General.
