Tallow based soaps

I agree - I’ve noted an underlying funk to a few tallow soaps. Try B&M soaps, I’ve not noticed any funk with the omnibus base at all and I also seem sensitive to that ‘note’

Phoenix & Beau very first batch had some funky underlying smell (Sanskrit). But not exactly beef, something else, weird scent.

hahah ok you guys have a great sense of humor and you really made me lol.
I've tried Cella, Faena so far and I got out of both of them a beefy-animal kind of scent. Don't get me wrong, I am not talking about a strong scent, just a mild undertone, still though, I can smell it.
Maybe I was that unlucky and in both cases got a "bad" batch??

Both are scented. Cella is almond scented (and I really like it) and Faena is Greek Skinos (another fantastic scent). Still though when applying the lather on the face, I kept getting that beefy smell... So very disappointing.

The likes of Cella are simple formulations of few ingredients. If ingredients like tallow and shea butter are not sufficiently refined, the base will have an obvious scent. These are then typically masked by adding fragrance.

There will also be more complex formulations that use deodorisers to neutralise the base smell. For example, B&M has ingredients like ricinoleates that serve this purpose.

At the end of the spectrum, you get foams and gels in pressurised cans where $millions of R&D are spent so that their parts are manufactured without much funk to them and any off-scents (like Triethanolamine) masked by fragrances that are carefully engineered to seem ‘hygienic’.

For another illustration, MdC’s Nature is unscented but not scentless. Like so many things in life, raw materials are closer to nature but lack the refinement of processing. Choose your compromise.

Faena is notorious for smelling beef...
Cella also goes rancid shortly after use.

Except for Declaration Grooming (older formula), I never had a tallow based soap smelling beef.

I have 3-4 artisan soaps in the den though, so don't take my word.

I mostly use Proraso..

I don't know Faena and can't comment on it.
I do know Cella, however. I've read some comments saying the soap had gone rancid. But never after a short time; if anything, the opposite: after a very long time and perhaps with an unorthodox preservation method.

Yes, this is true of all unscented soaps I have tried. Thanks for making the point.

I thought about that but I've tried two different tallow-based soaps and I am getting the exactly same undertone and that is why I was dissapointed with tallow-based soaps.

My nose immediately detects tallow undertones too (I'd call it greasy animal fat rather than specifically beef). First became consciously aware when several hard soap brands started changing from tallow to veggie a few years ago and I had both tallow and veggie versions of the same soap at the same time: e.g. MWF, Lea., Speik. My preference is veggie.

Whether or not a soap contains animal products is no indication of how good it is. Your position on this makes as much sense as it would if you refused to buy soap that came in a green tub.

Stirling is tallow, and I think Proraso tubs isn’t tallow
