Skin feeling tight post-shave...

Interesting thread this gents..I have never used a soap that has made my skin feel tight, but have definitely used some that have made my skin burn...as odd as that sounds..I get it as well with some post shave products.. for example La Toja stick burns me like crazy and Gillette Series sensitive balm ironically.

Not to derail the the thread but anyone have any ideas what that could be that causes this kind of sensation/reaction?:scratchhead:
Cinnamon is known as a cause for burn, and clove?, and I'm sure one may have individual sensitivities towards other spices, EOs, FOs etc.

Myself, I get burn from Ogallala Bay Rum, and more of an unspecified irritation - much to my sorrow - from Jabonman's Tierra Humeda, both the balm and the soap.

@halvor is pointing you in the right direction, it would seem likely you have an allergy against a component/s of the fragrance. Also Halvor is on the money again for noting Essential Oils as having some known components that are dermal irritants and sensitizers. Misconception of Essential Oils is rife on the internet, people believe because they are extracted from plants that they are not chemicals and are healthy. This would be why the EU cosmetic directive stipulate very tight guidelines when it comes to the using them.

Clove, Cinnamon and Pimento, (the later mostly used in Bay Rum) are known to be of high risk. There are other EO of this family but these three have the highest content of eugenol, a compound of the phenylpropanoids family/class of CHEMICALS.

@Shaverrific666 both La Toja and the Gillette balm contain these 3 known organic fragrant chemical compounds that are irritants to some people. Coumarin, Limonene, Linalool.

If I had to guess what you were reacting to in order of the most likely I would go;

Linalool
Limonene
Coumarin

I won't post my reasoning why I have rated the above in this order. Although the night is young unfortunately I do have other work to be getting on with. Sorry :)

You could ask your doctor to test against these. If you do I would be most interested to know the results. Good luck!

Coincidentally I've just used a sample of Carson's Apothecary cream - lathered like a champ and burned like a bugger!

Many thanks Darron for the detailed analysis, much appreciated..why someone would think you made really good soap or something with this kind of knowledge:laugh::wink: :notworthy:

Buggeration! I hate it when it burns..:heat: fortunately for such occasions I have a trained swarm of bees to cover the sensitive areas on my face in a beard formation..the stinging stops the burning really well!

The only other stuff that burned like that was TOBS...
In seriousness I have been quite lucky..and not had too many products that have reacted with my old "boat race" but it's weird that the things that are normally marketed as for "sensitive" skin.. seem to be the worst. which TOBS was it @bandito ? I remember getting a nasty sting/burn from the Jermyn Street stuff.

Pretty much all of those I tried (peppermint was definitely one). I often get some mild irritation, but not to the degree caused by TOBS, and now the Carson's.

Hmmm both creams and soaps? I was fine with TOBS soaps..just the Jermyn Street and Lavender creams seem to not agree with me. Mind you there's so much stuff out there to try now..lot's of great soaps ..with top notch ingredients.

That list would imply that Chris reacts to more or less every aftershave and soap out there? Seems to be linalool and/or limonene in mostly everything?

A point well made..never had any problem many soaps that contain linalool and limonene..also I did wonder about pure essential oils..though I use them in my own aftershave concoctions (Peppermint, White Camphor, Eucalyptus, Lavender, Spearmint, Juniper ect) and again not even a tingle or irritation..

Another one I remember getting irritation and burning from is Boots own brand aftershave balm..shame as it's pretty good value.

Your right, they are components of most Essential Oil blends and Fragrances.

@Shaverrific666 Interesting to see you use these without any reaction? I just checked and didn't get the full ingredients list last time for the Gillette balm. They do share another fragrance component Butylphenyl Methylpropional which is a synthetic lily aldehyde. It has a sweet floral scentthat smells like a Lilly Of the Valley.

PM me you address we can do a test here if your willing. I have some fragrances with this in. Its OK I wont burn your face, I will send you it in different strengths and starting with the weakest you just place a very small q tip on the soft inner part of your arm. If you get a tingling sensation after 10 minutes, then we have found your reaction.

This is why it is important for artisans and anyone who formulate cosmetic products with essential oils and/or fragrances in them to have testers, and the more, the better.

It can stop other people from experiencing unnecessary discomfort.

I too react to scents with high amounts of eugenol in, which is a bummer as I like Bay Rum scents but most don't agree with me. So I now avoid them like the plague. :(

What a gent you are Darron! Your in depth investigation of my bizarre skin reactions is much appreciated! I will PM you shortly. I would be happy to test any of your products..perhaps the entire range?
I jest but again, very grateful. :notworthy:
