That’s not sovereign fibre, sovereign is labelled as such. That’s the platinum which is really worrying as it used to be excellent.

When buying it was listed as sovereign grade

My newly acquired Chubby 2 came with a new type of Sovereign Grade Fibre, it looks like a G5A, it feels like a G5A but it’s not a G5A. This one has far more backbone and it’s really hard to splay it. Almost impossible for face lathering. Bowl lathering like I do is suitable. So be aware when purchasing a Sovereign Grade Fibre brush.

Was the brush photographed on the website as Synthetic Bristle or Sovereign Fibre?

Yes- it’s certainly priced as a Sovereign. I guess they put it in a ‘wrong’ handle. Either way both the Sovereign and the Platinum fibres are highly rated and this sounds like a major fail - I also hated the G5A because of its lack of splay

Can someone advise me please how does Simpsons' 'Sovereign' synthetic grade compares to the Muhle fibre (synthetic) grade?

The Simpsons Platinum grade I have repeatedly tried before (CH2 and D3) but always found the knot too tight with not enough splay (for my taste).

I am considering the purchase of a CH3 in Sovereign, so your feedback is valuable.

Sorry K I missed your request. Sovereign is easy to splay and nowhere near as tight as the early Simpsons synthetics. However, judging from @Levi experience they may have changed.

@Levi Looking at your SOTD pic, I'm pretty sure you don't have Sovereign. Mislabelled on the website, I think.
An email to Mark is definitely required.
What's the loft and any excessive glue that could explain the inadequate splay?

I’ve sent a email if they changed the knots or did something went wrong. @Optometrist i’m at work so I will measure the loft tonight and see how much glue has been used.

Yes, my new Platinum from some weeks ago was different too - didn't like it at all and gave it away

Can't remember if it was Paul? @p.b but someone here purchased a brush from APShave Co using their latest fibres supposed to be that which Simpson uses. I recall there was disappointment with that brush too.

Definitely not what I expected. I do believe that the knots that APshave Co offers are the same ones that Simpson now offers.

Approximately 54mm

This is the old Sovereign fibre that we all know and love. Easy to splay, slightly scrubby and decent but not overbearing backbone.
