Shaves per tub

I don't typically use artisan soaps and always 2 pass shaves with 22-24mm syths or boars. Usage averages:

MWF, DRH and other triple milled: .5g/shave
Haslinger, Proraso, Cella and other croaps: 1g/shave
TOBS and other creams: 2g/shave

I find I always use about 1g of soap per shave with any soap. That's with a 24mm or 25mm synth and a 2 pass shave plus touch ups. Still haven't finished a tub, but I weigh each of them at the start so know how much I've used
Have been using my new Cella Bio over the last couple of weeks and found that I'm definitely using more than with a harder soap, about 1.6g per shave.

Interesting thread. I’ve measured soap/cream per shave quite a few times and my experience is very similar to @Matsilainen I do a 2-pass shave.

I’m averaging 0.5g to about 1.5g per shave. Here are some examples.

MdC - tub lasted 9 months shaving 6 times/week, lathering with a Chubby 1 Super, averaged about 1g/shave. With a more modest brush, I can get by with as little as 0.5g MdC. It’s a soft, but very concentrated soap.

Castle Forbes - I measured it out, 0.5g/shave, consistently. That means that there is about 1 year’s worth of shaves in a tub. A gentleman on another forum calculated that CF cost him about 0.5 cents/shave over Proraso.

Other concentrated (~0.5g/shave) soaps/creams are Acqua di Parma (current yellow tub/tube version), Santa Maria Novella, ABC hard soap (discontinued), I Coloniali Mango Oil soap (discontinued), Pre de Provence. Most good quality hard soaps and a few concentrated creams can be close to 0.5g/shave.

i’ve also learned some things. If the soap doesn’t lather well or takes excessive loading, try a different brush. A lot of (especially) North American artisan soaps are not cured very well and contain a lot of water, one of my peeves with them. If you’re using >1.5g per shave, you’re probably buying water at soap prices. They can be VERY expensive to use because getting 0.5g of soap required 1.5g (or more) of product. I prefer concentrated soaps and creams for the economy of use, plus they tend to be higher quality products.

Hope this helps!

My tub of Eufros lasted just 22 shaves. I've been keeping records on this subject for the past 8 years. I use all three major types of brushes. In the beginning I went to a lot of effort to measure the amount used per shave but I got tired of that after a year or so. Now I just record how many shaves I get from all of the ones I use. I'm down to about 40 soaps and creams now, and I like to try to get one used up before going to the next one. I got 100 shaves out of a jar of MdC Fougere. 101 shaves out of a jar of XPEC. Those are the most I've recorded. Currently I'm working on a tallow first cake of Penhaligons English Fern - discontinued a long time ago. I've used it now for 51 shaves, and It'll probably go another 20 or 30 (or more). I was pretty well burned out on MdC after using it every day for 3 full months. As you can probably imagine, when I get about halfway through one, I begin to eagerly look forward to being able to go on to the next one.

Obviously, I couldn't give a d*** about using only the bare minimum to squeeze out the maximum possible shaves. Believe it or not, I never load the brush on the soap for more than maybe ten (10) seconds. I load vigorously but only a short time. I've watched some of the numerous videos, and it seems that most of those guys load their brushes for far more than 8 or 10 seconds. One guy loaded his brush for 2 1/2 minutes. That's a very long time!

Excellent stuff.
I have just had a bit of a clear out of my soaps.
After that, working on a very 'ish' sort of numbers, it looks like I have approx 1,000 shaves in my cupboard.
Given that I mostly only shave every three days, that looks like I have about ten years of soap.
I think that will do for now.

Well, the aim is add one, remove one.
I have a tidy space for two stacks.... (plus a couple more for now until i use the lowest ones up)
I did consider raising the shelf, but i reckon ten years prevents me from panic buying (just)
Although i AM very low on Eufros.........
