Shavemac D01 2 band. The enigma.

Thanks for your response.

Just to complicate matters further you have mentioned something that is obvious, but I had neglected..... How you use the brush! It could well be that those us us who have issues with this hair maybe are just a little more heavy handed with it.....????

I have never tried a d01 3 band.... Maybe this would be a better option for some of us.
First of all, I apologize for bringing in the 3-band in the discussion [emoji1] Perhaps it would be interesting to try, I am sure it will be a completely different experience.

On the pressure... I don’t know how people use their badgers. I think, in general, it is advised not to push them. Some friends of mine tell me things like “Oh you know, you would be surprised how many people put a lot of pressure on the badger”. I have no idea! And anyway, it’s just shaving, people use their brushes as they like, so I don’t really go telling them what they should and shouldn’t do.

Only once was left in complete shock when a guy was trying to convince me that a 24mm knot is quite sufficient for shaving face, and anything above that is too large. He demonstrated this by taking a 24mm brush, completely dry, and stuck it to his face until full splay. Sure enough, it covered his cheek completely! I was like “O-kaaaay....[emoji33]”

I assume you are not aware that the fellow member writing those lines (which you are referring to) is an enthusiast who selects, buys, ties and glues with his own hands the hair in the knots he makes.
..
Owning a dozen of $200 Shavemacs and posting pictures of them does not make one an expert. Sometimes we all need to "just ask".
Not sure where the “expert” comment came from - I didn’t insinuate ar state that, so you’re off base. My post referred to the method of googling images and making assumptions. That is an unreliable way to obtain long-term usage information - whether you buy or tie your own.

What I wanna know is how on Earth I missed your Instagram account... if you are in fact @mike_the_kraken? :) Beautiful feed!

Oh no, please don’t. The thread is in fact about 2-bands, I actually hijacked it with the 3-band talk... basically just trying to extend the conversation and the enigma [emoji6]
Well, that is good to know.

By the way, if I were you, I wouldn't be fearful of applying some light pressure to your badgers brushes when face-lathering. I have been doing this to all of my 2-Band badger brushes, for the past eight years, and I have seen no direct evidence of any damage to the knots. They all still look great. :)

Oh yes, for sure! I’m not using feather light strokes, there’s definitely pressure involved. I also like a good scrub, just not pushing the brush into full splay, as @Nishy mentioned above.

Good to hear and I never apply so much pressure to get the knot to fully splay. I don't see the point as doing that will only expedite the deterioration of the knot.
If you have a good dense knot, then some light pressure is more than enough. :)

Not sure how off subject this is but I have 2 Shavemacs and love them both. Without doubt my favourite 2 brushes. The DO1 ( left ) was quite scritchy when I got it ( courtesy of a member here albeit through a different forum - he offloaded it I think for that very reason ). It has become less so over the 3 years I have had it and is now really lovely. Still has a detectable 'scritch' to it though. I tend to reach for it more when using soaps as it has the backbone to go with it. The other, an original 177 silvertip , has to take the prize though. It was soft when I got it and it is soft now. I have had this over 10 years. I cannot actually remember how the banding looked on it when I first got it. I do remember Berndt knocking 20 euros off it though as the label was VERY slightly off centre. :okay: Looks almost bleached now. Both get 'abused' in that I do not consciously hold back when applying to bowl , puck or face depending on the circumstance. Yes, they show signs of 'wear' ( especially the 177) but hey, wouldn't' your 'head' after 10 years of lathering?
