Scratch removal

Can anyone recommend a scratch remover for brush handles? I have a couple of scratches on my Shavemac... fortunately it's the black part of the handle but still I'd like them gone.

I've used Mother's Aluminum and Mag polish for many plastic surfaces including old fountain pens, straight razor scales, and plastic on autos including head and taillight lens.

I do have metal polishes but none of them are recommended for acrylic - it's a custom brush that I can't replace.

Just checked the fountain pen forum for other suggestions. One shop uses, Micro-Gloss® Liquid Abrasive, Type 1 Cleaner & Polish - Micro Surface

I'd suggest car polish, start with the finest to see if that works, then a step coarser if it doesn't, then coarse again until the scartches are removed, an then go finer again to give it the shine you're satisfied with. this method proved to be the best for me for removing scratches on straight razors without causing new or deeper ones than the initial - which also happened to me and i had to work my arse off to make it shine again...

I picked up Flitz polish not long ago for a project I can’t remember now, on the basis it was less abrasive than what I already had.

Curious now if anyone has experience with Flitz and brush resin. I’m sure I’m past-due to drop something…

If you have access to a small polishing mop there are specialist polishing compounds for plastics available from thepolishingshop.co.uk

You can get small mops that fit into an electric drill - it’s best if you can hold the drill in a vice and make sure that the mop is rotating towards you. Be aware that some compounds will cause a heat build up if you a bit heavy handed so take advice on what to use from the website.

Keep in mind that metal polish works differently on plastic and vice versa. Car paint is usually (someone correct me if i'm wrong) acrylic based, hence the car polish suggestion.
Car headlight polish worked great for me on various plastic straight razor scales, too.

Meguiars make a product for polishing plastics/acrylics called Plastx (there are varieties of this name)

I use it for polishing scratches out of fountain pens, screens on mobile phones, I know other people who have used it on plastic headlight covers.


You will need only a tiny about, about the size of a pea will do the job on a microfiber cloth so this will last you a very long time.


A product that has been recommended to me but I haven't used (because I am happy with Meguiars) is made by Jay Leno's Garage and is a non abrasive metal polish

The Polywatch didn't work on mineral glass watch crystals for me.

If the scratch is deep it might need to be filled and leveled. Luthiers use crazy glue to fill scratches on musical instruments.
