Safety Haircutter and HomeBarber

This topic is probably not about use in 2026, but about memories and collections.

Once I saw a photo of a French 4-sided razor comb Quiz ( Quiz peigne rasoir de securite ) . Searching for information did not give answers as to who and when produced and sold it. I saved the photo and forgot about it.

And then I accidentally came across an ad for the sale of such a copy of this razor produced in the USSR (almost all razors produced in the USSR were copies of other razors). Now I have such an unusual exhibit in my collection.
The name of this razor ЗЧМ 194-У (this is clearly an abbreviation of the full name, but I'm still looking for information), if you try to translate into English, you can write it like ZCHM 194-U.
It looks like it is made of LDPE (high pressure polyethylene). It has four working sides marked with dots. Quite a strong design, you need to apply force to disassemble it. For work, you can install one or two blades at a time . Dimensions: height 70 mm (2,75 inch) ; width 50 mm ( 1.97 inch) ; thickness 0.8 mm. ( 0.039 inch) . Weight 17 g (0.6 oz) .

And today.
I didn't plan it that way, but I ended up with a full set of Comet "Safety Haircutter". It looks like it's never been used.

I also wouldn't mind adding a device like this to my collection. There's a video of someone not just getting a haircut, but also shaving their face with this device.

My Dad aquired something like this in the 1970s ( as Dad's do ...) and it was marketed along the lines of " Home haircut ! ,save yourself £££'s at the Barbers !"

I don't remember it exactly , but it was definitely a case of adjusting the level of cut then combing your hair with the device and the idea was that it would thin out your hair in some way and so give you a haircut of sorts.

It was a firm No from me ! 😱 😱 😱

Weapons of childhood torture. Soon as Mother whipped that bloody thing oot, we three boys were outta sight faster faster than a politician’s u-turn. ‘I’ll just trim your hair,” she says. “Aye, that’ll be feckin’ right!” Instant vanishing powder. Half way doon the hill, through the woods, hyperventilating from sudden extreme exertion and pure panic. Memories of pieces of scalp and clumps of hair lying on the blood spotted floor. ‘Twas pure evil, so it was. I mean she spends a’ that money and time doon the hairdressers then hacks at our poor heids like Ivanhoe with a broadsword. No fair!

However, It was my introduction to gardening: I dug the deepest hole my poor wee self could manage and buried that bugger. Years from now, they’ll dig it up and be utterly horrified at the violent depredations visited upon wee kiddies in my day. <huge involuntary shudder>

Parallel memories of being sent to the local barber shop as a teenage child at the end of the summer holidays. You point to the picture on the wall of a long stylish haircut and say "can i have it like that please ?"

..... and you got the back-to-school-special every time (short top, short back and short sides). 😱

The old Barber always then justified his refusal to follow orders :) by chuckling and saying something like "Well we don't want the Headmaster coming down here to complain do we ?"

We lived in different times. Try telling that to the kids of today and they won't believe you etc, etc 🤣
