RIP Prince Philip

A larger than life character, a force of nature not afraid to speak his mind, which frequently got him into trouble. His legacy of charitable and conservation work was established before it became fashionable and we're diminished by his death. RIP.

The Queen has always seen the monarchy as a duty for life and I don't imagine that will change.

This may seem ignorant, but there you go: I knew little of him, until watching The Crown on Netflix. While I am sure the series probably does take some fictional and speculative turns, I believe I also learnt some of his true character and actions. He grew on me, good sides and bad, and more or less a product of his history, like the rest of us. May he rest in peace.

Yes, that is what I meant by the straw that breaks the camel's back comment. I doubt otherwise that she would abdicate.

I don't think she will abdicate and I hope she still has many more years to live, she is a remarkable Queen.

I feel the monarchy is safe in her hands but with Charles as king, I see troubling times for the monarchy, I hope I'm wrong.

I've read that the Queen plans on stepping down when she turns 95. She's only held out this long because she's frustrated with Charles, and his lack of sense of duty.

I can see Her Highness the Queen abdicating the throne, though I hope not, if she does I hope it skips a generation and the Crown goes to William and Katherine. The Monarchy is changing like it or not because society is changing, like it or not, we cannot fight it because our leaders do not want to fight it.
We have been stuck in a semi Victorian time warp which has been our strength up to now and the recent shenanigans with the Royal Family are only glimpses of what is to come for this Country and our once held values.
Once my generation shuffles off this mortal coil there will be no one left to provide the common decency, spirit of fair play, manners and dare I say Englishness I have held dear. I am glad I will not be around to see the inevitable decline.

I’d like to see William and Kate both seem to have that Englishness but on a more upto date way.

I’m sad for them.

He was a beer man - Boddingtons allegedly - so I’ve opened a few bitters to toast his memory. I’ve also read or heard in the past that he wore Penhaligon’s and used Truefitt & Hill.
I had a haircut at T&H a couple of years ago and I asked them about this. Apparently there was one particular member of staff who had long since retired but was kept on the books specifically to cut the Duke's hair. Apparently they would get a call and be notified that a car was being sent round to pick this guy up, then he would be taken to the Duke.

Absolutely no way that the crown will skip a generation. As for Charles, he will have learned lots from his mother during what must be the longest apprenticeship ever. Anyone who thinks the British monarchy is threatened fails to appreciate this country’s strong addiction to tradition - there have been far more unpopular monarchs than Charles. In fact his namesake is a very good example but it didn’t take more than a few years for there to be a restoration.

I just read on that the BBC received a lot of complaints about all the coverage of the death of Prince Philip, apparently the final of Masterchef was not aired. What the hell is the matter with people? There was wall to wall coverage but for goodness sake he was from an era that will not be repeated. Just look at the 'celebrities' that so many people look up to/follow ... Kardashians for example. Hope I'm not around to see how it pans out as the future looks a bit too orange. :D

Maybe he wasn't everybody's cup of tea?
