Ok Rob, I'm going to be "Pedantic" . You never mention Celluloid Scales, you just say "Old Scales". Old razor scales can be made of plastic, celluloid, bone, Ivory, wood, or aluminum(aluminium for you). Oh, hard rubber too.

Ballistol was developed in Germany for use in treating wounds as well as providing lubrication and protection to weapons during warfare.

Yeppers, I did miss those two. Although I haven't heard of any old razors made from Stainless.
Interesting, about Ballistol being used as an antiseptic.

Stainless steel straight razors predate WWII. Now I don't know if that would be considered o;d or not.

Not having that many razors, I am using most, if not all of them over a short period of time so that I would notice metalic degradations. The reason I started the thread was because all that my razors came through last year with no issues. None of my razors have touched a stone in over a year, just diamond pasted balsa and horse and linen stropping.
If I did use something, it would be mineral oil. The Barristol sounds interesting and I am now more familiar.

Scales too on straight razors for medical use that need to go into an autoclave.

+1 for that , haven't been using straights as long as Rob , but my experience of Ballistol on all types of straights and scales is good.

Why don’t you just accept that what I said about Ballistol being safe for scales is correct? There’s an expression in this country that when you are in a hole - stop digging.

I accept it, I just needed clarification on Celluloid Scales. Please re-read post #16. You are making an issue, out of a non-issue.
But, I'm all for debating issues that have already been resolved. Like English Food, being tasteless and boring. We could debate that.
