I did try a few different pre shaves when I started to use a straight razor. The conclusion was that they did nothing for my shave that a proper lather would not do. The only time I'll use an after shave balm is when I royally mess up a shave and have irritation which is infrequently. For that Nivea works as well as anything else I have tried.

Yes, it certainly does. Personally I am amazed at some of the rituals people go through to accomplish the basically simple act of shaving.
I have been scrapping my face for at lest 45 years now but only recently with straight razors. The recent experience with straight razors actually taught me the most about shaving properly. A keen edge used at the right angle with minimal to no pressure combined with a good shave soap that produces a rich slick lather are the major ingredients to obtaining a smooth comfortable irritation free shave.
OTH if pre shaves and after shave balms help others out that is all good too.

If scrapping your face is your intended goal, I reckon you're going the best way about it.
No, scrapping my face is not the intended goal only a phrase used jokingly. I do enjoy a daily 4 pass have with any type of razor that I have. they are normally smooth and irritation free shaves. As I said when I do bugger up a shave I use Nivea after shave balm. My point was that if your shaving/lathering technique is good and you don't have sensitive skin you can likely easily get by nicely without a pre shave product.
Beginners to traditional wet shaving can try and compensate for poor technique by using a pre shave product which can mask the real problem, poor technique. Again, if using a pre shave product works for someone fill your boots. For me it made no difference and if it did I would be using it.

No, I do not think that is a fair comparison and it is an old saw often used to justify paying stupefying amounts of money. The Vauxhall vs Conti is not directly comparable to pre shave or no pre shave for me. As I said before pre shaves I have tried did not increase the quality of my shave. Why would I spend the money on a pre shave for no gain? Others are free to do as they wish. I am sure driving a Conti would increase my driving pleasure over pushing a Vauxhall around. Even though I am worth it I doubt I'll ever drive a Conti and not really too heart broken over that either.
There is a whole lot of BS associated with every hobby I have ever been involved with. You find what works for you never mind what the rest are doing.
