You rant because you didn't got a chance to spend $300+ on a "super, uper, duper, titanium coated, extra strength, self adjustable no lube needed, always in mini skirt, super long legged" adjustable razor?

Wow it must suck being you successfully avoiding the damage of your bank account.
Thanks for the input @bazemk1979 always nice to see two sides of any story.

Ahem... Please reread my post, because I do believe I made myself quite clear that I was speaking of Britain specifically, not the rest of Europe.

Really? What was the actual customs duty excluding VAT? Something along the lines of £5?

If you're talking about the VAT tax you had to pay to the Customs Office, you would have to pay that tax even if the Wolfman was made in the UK, which is really beyond the scope of the OP. And that is where the lion's share of your custom's fee went towards: VAT.
You're right Len, the word duty gets mis-used so often I made the same mistake. I did not have to pay import duty, I had to pay VAT plus a £16 ransom.

What does value added tax have to do with purchases from a country where our government has no jurisdiction? When we buy from elsewhere in the world we should not be subject to British law. Another reason for giving the EU the boot.

It would not matter if you were in the EU or not when it comes to paying your VAT on goods imported to England. You do not pay any applicable sales tax in the foreign jurisdiction you are buying from but are subject to paying the VAT/sales tax applicable in your own country, England.

When I import/buy from a foreign country I pay no tax at point of sale but am liable to pay the HST, our Canadian sales in Ontario, for the goods I bring in.

You will pay your own sales tax no matter where you buy from, domestic or foreign. I believe the sticker price you see on an article in England/EU already has the VAT included. Over here the sticker price is before sales tax so you have to add 13%, I think, to the price when you pay at point of sale.

Too right about bowls and scuttles. There are some lovely ones from North America on Etsy, but, oh my, the cost of getting them here, and in one piece. I've had a couple made in the UK (Watergaw and another), and I also have 4 Woodhead productions, but I'm surprised there aren't more UK makers producing the beautifully-coloured articles available over there.
Looking for UK based? Have a look at Little Wren Pottery https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/LittleWrenPottery#

Unfortunately those rules, including the 20 USD VAT free threshold, are set by the WTO (World Trade Organisation) not the EU. We will however have more flexibility on the VAT. Start lobbying for a 0% rate on personal care items.
