This looks like a packhorse bridge.

I am not sure I should be admitting this in public but they are an interest of mine, one of the things that I could happily do is to ride my Velocette to find each of them in the country and do some research on when and why they were built.

Yes, it would have been the main access route for all traffic of the day across the river Doon. It was the bridge noted in the Robert Burns poem Tam O' Shanter.
All the photo's are the same bridge from different view points. From what I've seen all these early 1700's all have a very steep gradient. If it's any consolation to you, they interest me too :)
