Paper money and coins

I can see that by using cash you are not leaving a digital tail. Considering all the other multitude of things we do on a computer these days that leave digital trails, I doubt it makes much of a difference. Your personal info is out in so many ways and places as it is already and will only get worse as AI gets better.

Rarely use cash these days. The only regular time is our Sunday night takeaway pizza as they are cash only for everyone.

Other than that, I just have to make sure I have quid for the model railway club subs on a Thursday!

Good thread here. I generally carry $40-50 for day to day use as necessary, with a backup stash of $100. My father-in-law got me started with this “cash stash” practice many years ago and it’s held to this day. That said, probably 90% of my brick and mortar shopping purchases are by credit card.

Like many, I bristle at the tip screen on the credit card reader at takeaway joints for Chinese food, coffee, pizza, etc.. What?! When did this become a thing? Where’s your damn tip jar? If you give me good service with a smile I will consider a cash tip, but no way I will pad the merchant’s daily credit card take.

I tip very generously (min. 20%) in restaurants when the service has been exemplary. Another practice learned from my father-in-law. When we’ve traveled in the U.S., Europe and the Caribbean I consciously maintained that habit.

My daughter and son-in-law worked (until very recently) in the restaurant/pub/bar/tavern business in midtown Manhattan. Their very livelihoods most definitely relied upon customers who appreciated their service and tipped accordingly. They silently cringed when both, American and European tourists patronized the establishments. While their level of high quality service with a smile remained unchanged, they knew what to expect when the bill was paid. I’m guessing that was due to the tourist mind-set, “well, I’m never coming here again, so…”

I’ve converted to Apple Pay after numerous experiences with a businesses card reader. Home Depot is the worse and they don’t take Apple Pay. Publix isn’t any better.

I'm guilty as charged, we should use cash more but I usually pay on my phone using Google Pay, I could go for months and not spend any cash, I usually have about £100 in cash in my wallet but I don't seem to use it much. PS As for using self-checkouts, I don't like using them, although there is a positive especially if you can buy loose fruit, my go-to apples are Jazz they are pretty expensive, so when you key in a search for your apples make sure you choose the cheapest variety and you go home with the best most expensive apples  you can do it with a variety of loose items Advocados can magically become a much lesser fruit and so on.

This all reminds me of a time before mobile phones when people used call boxes and collected telephone cards, basically cash or a prepayment card. I was travelling all over the place and phoning home and work, now completely obsolete and not even a collectors market, I still have hundreds. I hope that cash does not go the same way.

Reminds me of the days when I was on the road for the Hoover company. I’d check in three times a day with the office for messages using roadside pay phones or customers’ telephones. Calls out to my customers were done with pay phones too. When pagers became a thing it became a little easier, but I still had to find a working phone. Then the cell phone came along and boom! Ease of use :)
