I’m thinking of going down this route having read some positive reports. Does anyone have recommendations of UK suppliers they’ve used?

Also, I will be specifying varifocal and transitional lenses so if you have any thoughts or potential problems I’d be grateful for advice.

I'll be watching this thread as well. I've used Glasses Direct for quite a few pairs of glasses now, all very cheap and all have been excellent. However, they have been single vision (reading glasses and sunglasses). I haven't yet dared get my varifocals online as the fitting is much more important for those. I've had to send back my varifocals twice before to get the lenses replaced as the transition was not quite in the right place for me. However, many of the online store offer no quibble refunds, so I guess it's just time you're losing if they aren't quite right for you.

That’s good to know that you both recommend Glasses Direct as they are the site that I used in order to find the price.

Update - it was Direct Sight I used not Glasses Direct - but nearly £300 cheaper than my High Street optician. Ordered yesterday so I’ll report back when they arrive.

Last two pairs I have ordered the frames from Cubitts, then I went to the local independent where he sorts out the lenses. Approx £125 for frame and around the same for the lenses which are transition varifocals.

Yes, Pret A Voir in Glasgow is amazing. I'm in Texas (greatest of the USA) and I still buy my lenses and frames from them. Here is their website: Pretavoir.co.uk. Not cheap, but great product selection and customer service.
