The problem is that if the sales are genuine, for example simple decluttering there is an assumption by HMRC that you are trading and there is some obligation on you to prove otherwise, it is not easy to prove a negative as we all know and not helped by HMRC having over one million unanswered pieces of correspondence, equivalent to a year's backlog. The implication on being branded a Trader is that you are required to pay tax in advance on the assumption that your sales will continue for the rest of the tax year and to be noted for the following tax year.
In any case, It does not seem fair to be taxed on the whole of the sale price as opposed to the profit, being income. For example, you find an item in a Charity Shop at £10, sell it for £20 on ebay, you are taxed at 20% on £20 and not on the price difference £10-£20. I can fully understand that this would be a nightmare for HMRC, unworkable in fact.

For the past several years, off and on, but when it's on it's REALLY on meaning multiple times a day. I'm talking 7 to 10, maybe more because sometimes I just don't answer and never listen to voicemails on my landline. Nobody who knows me calls on that line anyway. Come to think of it, I really don't need it so maybe I should just disconnect the line and save a little bit of money. But I digress. They also call my cell phone. I'm talking about spam calls SPECIFICALLY from "Green Energy Solutions". Anyone else get these annoying calls from people who mostly maintain accents from what sounds like India or Pakistan? And despite their apparent lack of "english or american" heritage, they always say their name is Jeff or Steve or Mike or Bill or you get the idea. Has anyone figured out how to make them stop? Do Not Call registries don't work. They used different stolen phone numbers to disguise themselves so blocking phone numbers won't work. Sometimes I just don't answer. Sometimes I answer and hang up immediately without saying anything. Sometimes I engage with them when I'm feeling a bit argumentative. I'll point out that there is "no way your name is Steve. What is your real name?" Sometimes I'll just adopt the exact same accent as theirs. But really, all I'd like to do is have them stop calling. I realize that all they are doing is building up a list of "verified numbers" that they can then sell to other scammers so my answering is probably counterproductive. Anyone with some tried and true suggestions for stopping this? TIA

My mobile is set so all unrecognised numbers, ie those not on my contact list, go straight to voicemail. 9 times out of 10 there’s no message but if there is a voicemail, I check the number on a “Who called me?” website first, which usually says it’s a scammer, so I just delete it and block the number. I block the ones with no message too.
Anyone who really needs to contact me can use another medium. Also, dump the landline if you don’t use it. That’s what we did.

Not a call, but I've had an unsolicited leaflet through the door offering me solar panels which apparently will be paid for 100% by a grant. Firstly, anything that seems to good to be true probably is and secondly, my house is listed

Because of where we are I suspect that they came via Royal Mail, who have to deliver anything that they're charged with delivering. We're too far off the beaten track for someone to have gone door to door.

Spam calls to the cell phone were more annoying for us five or six years ago. Since then, unwanted calls to the mobiles seem to have lessened. The landline otoh is bombarded by a dozen or more calls per week by a range of people, groups, scammers, spammers and other assorted shady types and nogoodniks who want to help me divest my nest egg. I never answer the house phone unless I recognize the calling number. Voicemail is my friend. Tbh, we kept our landline only for the alarm system. At some point in the coming year I plan to move, and don’t plan to use a landline based alarm system in the next place. I’m also, over time, changing my contact info with people, offices, etc., switching my contact info to the cell phone. I plan to eventually get rid of the landline because frankly, I don’t remember when I last made an outgoing call from that number.
Similar to how @MntnMan62 occasionally “plays” with his spam callers, I used to do the same with the mountains of junk mail that arrived at my door every week. I’d take inserts from one mailing and send them to another mass mailer in their prepaid return envelope. Did it for months! It was a hoot and quite cathartic. Now I just rip and recycle the paper. Maybe I should start playing with the junk mail again. Help keep the postal workers working…

I canceled the land line at least 10 years ago. For home security I installed Blink camaras and Greeni smart devices. The outside light are scheduled as well as some of the interior lights.
I've just spent an hour trying to get Excel to highlight dates that fall within the next 30 days in a different colour. No matter what I do with the settings it changes dates to MM/DD/YYYY and will not accept DD/MM/YYYY. You know, the format used by THE ENTIRE PLANET apart from Americans. Microsoft sucks.
