I had an appointment with my ophthalmologist last August. If you don’t get the first or second appointment in the morning, you’re just screwed. My appointment time was 11:30. I knew it would be a frustrating wait. And yes, he kept me waiting 45 minutes before I rescheduled and walked out. The new appointment was made for January 15 which is now rapidly approaching. October en envelope arrives in the mailbox. It’s the doctor. He’s retiring, but don’t worry, they’ve got a new doctor who is assuming the practice and if you have a preexisting appointment, no sweat, the new guy will see you then. I’m outa here. Buhbye.

This morning my phone rang. Caller ID said it was the doctor’s office. I answered with a cheery how do you do. I’ll bet you’re calling to confirm my appointment I said. No, they weren’t calling to confirm. They were calling to reschedule. Huh? I ranted and raved until I got my original appointment back. Wish me luck!

The situation was the same for me when my ophthalmologist died, and I had to try and get another one. I can well understand your frustration. It seems to be a common problem across Canada with insufficient medical specialist to service a growing aging population. Hell, even finding a GP to take you on as a family doctor is damn near impossible these days. Tough times in the Maritimes, no fish in Antigonish seems to cover it. OTH, I think a lot of countries are in the same situation wrt doctors which is scant comfort.
