This is why they are essential to the maintenance of a free society. This is also why they are hated by dictators, big businesses and any oppressive heads of state who don’t want to hear real truth and not just their own lies and “alternative facts”.
Given the depressing polarisation of society, conspiracy theory cranks and general (unintended) ignorance, we need them more than ever.
