Aluminium for just the centre piece, not the ballast or end pieces. I would have assumed brass would be used for the ballast as the cheapest, easiest to machine and densest option. for the last 2 months or so I have been working on a new razor handle design and wanted to gauge interest in this concept. I have to get this concept out there and see if I am even barking up the right tree with this.
Firstly a declaration - I am collaborating on this with another person. He is an Engineer, working for a very well known Forumla One (F1) team. I can say no more than that my friends... at this stage. He inspired me to the design and given his unique insights and skills with materials, he guided me somewhat on what can and cannot be achieved with the materials I am using. It all started out as a hybrid design using a mix of carbon fibre and stainless steel and has morphed, as he inspired me further, to come up with this concept.
OK to the meat of it - the design is a razor handle, From the outside it looks like a standard razor handle. A bit of knurling, some fancy ends bits - you get the picture. Hidden inside though is a system of ballast weights that allow the user to not only vary the weight of the handle but to also vary the balance point too. So you can add weights, take weights away and vary the handle weight by up to 24g in 6g increments. The base handle weight is 67g. Now - the weights that you add or deduct also have a threading on them. The internals of the handle also have threading on them so.... in this way you can vary the position of the weights to perfectly balance your razor. It is all sealed and protected from dirt and soap. I will be adding sealing rings to the design.
What do you guys think - a problem worth solving? Interested? Here are some of the design drawings I am working on - obviously I will post no details like threading sizes and dimensions of parts - don't want to make life too easy for Yaqi eh?

I dislike having a head heavy razor so having a handle I can use with the impressive but heavy Yaqi Sentinel head would be a bonus for me. Sure I can find the fulcrum point but I’m an unreasonable man who likes products to serve me not have me work around them hence the appeal in this product.
Fair enough, to each their own. Personally, I still don’t see it but, I understand the theory in making something functional, cohesive & “idiot proof” for lack of a better word (not saying nor insinuating that the maker or it’s potential customers are) or term.Why? - because it is a challenge.
I get it that it will be a niche product and "most" shavers will not need or require such a handle. However, there are a largeish number of people who like to have a little complication in their lives - something to adjust, to fiddle with, to get that perfect balance. I would not say it is for everyone.
As for the head - well... I do have a number of designs in the bag for heads that, again, will not appeal to everyone but there will be a significant number of people that it will appeal to.
Just for the record, this manual adjustment razor handle with variable balance point - this is a first step to something even more complex. I am also designing a stage 2 handle with a twist knob that will allow the user to vary balance merely by twisting the knob on the base. I will, at some point, also incorporate this into a fully adjustable razor. There are challenges - the number of moving parts increases greatly as the complexity of function increases. The current design for the knob-adjustable balance weights razor hamdle has 10 moving parts and I am not finished yet... it will be a tinkerers delight and will incopporate ballast weights, carbon fibre, staonless steel and brass.
