The facility is an amalgamation of the United States Air Force's Charleston Air Force Base and the United States Navy's Naval Support Activity Charleston which were merged on October 1, 2010. Of the three Naval Weapons Stations on the U.S. East Coast, the Charleston facility is the largest.

A joint civil-military airport, Joint Base Charleston shares runways with Charleston International Airport for commercial airline operations on the south side of the airfield and general aviation aircraft operations on the east side.

There used to be an air show at Woodford that I went to for years, the weather was always either scorching hot or tipping it down. One of the wet years the USAF were there and I was looking forward to seeing some aircraft that I didn’t normally get to see. Unfortunately there was an announcement that owing to the weather conditions the USAF would not be flying. The RAF still did their thing. 😁

Earlier this evening we had an excellent view of a large mature bald eagle gracefully circling low overhead riding the thermals. Then two seagulls started harassing it and drove the eagle off. Who would have thought a couple of shite hawks could drive off a mature bald eagle.

I was stood outside the other day and heard a plane, the unmistakable low revving engine of a WW2 bomber. I looked up and saw a B17, I don't know what the stall speed is of a B17 but he was on the money +1mph and so low flying, I have never seen a plane at such a low altitude above houses and enjoyed the few seconds as it passed over. I saw the pilot clearly and we exchanged a wave.

Great sight to see.

Nothing compares the sound the engines of these WWII bombers make. I was lucky enough to get a shot as the Mynarski memorial Lancaster passed overhead about 1 minute before touchdown. Got to love the sound those 4 RR Merlin engines make.

It amazes me that the Lancaster and the Vulcan were designed by the same man, and their maiden flights were only eleven years apart.
