I have no opinion on the life of vehicles or any brand of vehicle but we too are fortunate to have found a smaller garage near us that have looked after our car for the last few years. We found them quite by accident when the wife drove through a load of water and the car started making horrendous noises. We took a chance and instead of getting hit for a new exhaust, we got a £35 bill for the time it took them to sort it while she had a brew in reception. We've been with them ever since. The smaller garages are indeed worth exploring.

Who knows. How long's a piece of string. I was referring to Audi particularly because I drive one. A while ago, I had to have something looked at. A very minor issue . The vehicle was under warranty and they quoted a price just to look at it. That's like having a tradesman look at a job you want done in your house and charging you for the privilege. Audi contact their customers to remind them when a service is due. I'm was contacted earlier this year. They quoted about £750 for the service which is really only an oil and filter change. Thankfully I have a very good garage near my work who did the service for a lot less. Audi are no different to other car manufacturers once they sell the vehicle. Really I should re phrase that and say they're all thieving bastards.

I purchase Mobil One full synthetic and a filter for under $40. I pay Walmart $30 to change the oil and filter. I do it early and with an appointment which takes less than 30 minutes.

I change the oil every 5000 miles. One a week I check most or all the fluids. I try to check the tires and also maintain the recommended air pressure.

I used to have a turbo diesel and did a daily 150 mile round trip commute, changing the oil at 5000 miles also. Mobil 1 was the only oil that stopped the turbo whining at the end of the commute.

Tubo charging just adds another potential problem to the vehicle maintenance issue. Wreck a turbo charger and the rebuild or replacement is awfully expensive.

I have owned a non turbo charged diesel pickup truck and they do present other problems that are expensive to fix and in some cases could be lethal to the driver.

There is a Youtube video about oils that call themselves synthetics but are actually very refined conventional oils and the US Courts in a case brought by Mobil against Castrol decided that Castrol could call such oils as synthetic and therefore fool the buying public.

I knew a man who took his Mobil 1 container into his servicing garage when his car was due for an oil change and asked them to use that oil, he was pretty sure that the mechanics laughed at him behind his back but when a head gasket went at 90,000 miles the mechanic called the others to look at the engine, no wear in the bores or cam lobes and the cylinder head and cam cover was as bright and clean as the day it was made.

Subaru recommended every 6500, but I changed at 5000.

I know diesels are popular in Europe for autos. I do not know what a turbo is popular.

Diesels are much less popular than they used to be due to the quest for clean emissions and the higher price of diesel as compared to petrol.

Pity really, the Mitsubishi and Toyota turbo diesels, in particular, are unbreakable and capable of starship mileages

When I bought my first and only diesel pickup truck part of the attraction was to amortise the additional cost of the diesel engine to the list price of the truck over time by saving on fuel costs. Well that idea did not last long because the price of diesel became more than gasoline shortly after I had bought the truck in 1985. It had been less than gasoline at time of purchase. I never bought a diesel vehicle after that experience.

for us with oil... never needed synthetic or additives required by the manufacturer... use synthetic cause it extends the change mileage... 3k to 5k... maybe have to do 2 oil changes a year... and no specific brand... typically what's on sale...
