Monschau Germany

Grumpy old man
I came across a video on Monschau Germany and was reminded of the time we visited it on a day trip with my cousin and her husband from Koln. That was too many years ago than I care to remember but Monschau looks as good as ever. We had a great walk around and a very good lunch. If you are in the area, it is well worth a visit.

The thing that amazed me is that this was one of the areas were Germany massed troops and armoured vehicles in the lead up to The Battle of the Bulge. This buildup was not discovered prior to the attack. We also saw rows of dragons teeth that formed part of the Siegfried Line defences.

I enjoy these walking tours around places that we may never have the chance to see for ourselves, especially the architecture, for example a number of the buildings have vertical tiles on the walls, an unusual feature, seen on smart well to do houses in the south east of England, called mathematical tiles and date from the seventeenth century, Mathematical tiles were used on houses, I thought restricted to England but obviously in Germany also.

Lovely city, very touristic, but still well worth a visit for a few days. If you like walking / hiking, plenty nice routes which start near the city. Photos from summer 2024.

Like a dummy I was about to given a definition of vertical showing some more mathematical tiles, an interest of mine, along with Firemarks and building retainers for bowed out walls, then I saw the pic!
