Monsavon is the French equivalent of the Palmolive stick in the UK, price-wise, around €1.30 in most supermarkets. It is usually the soap to begin with when it comes to wet shaving. Also true that the fragrance is a polarising mix of cinnamon and lavender.
Beside Le Père Lucien's recipe (if Monsavon fragrance is unbearable), we like to leave new Monsavon soaps/pucks to dry, so that it will shrink (if patient, volume can decrease down to 50%) and noticeably harden; most of the time, this process considerably improves lathering when adding water.
I remember my first times with Monsavon, it took me half a dozen shaves to master lathering this soap (lots of water usually did the trick).
