I tried a Mac for two months ... horror. Fortunately a colleague was willing to trade his ThinkPad for my MacBook Pro.
Now I must add that my OS of choice is Linux (fortunately an allowed OS in our company). You need to forget everything you know about user interfaces when you switch to Apple, IMHO.

I get that feeling with Windows 10. Every two months I need to boot into Windows and at some point, I stare at a wall of tiles and think "WTF does it want from me?"
MacOS and Linux aren't all that different. YMMV
Maybe, but the MacOS UI is very different from KDE. Besides, on Linux you can choose the desktop manager that you like best (I used fvwm for years as well).

I don’t even switch on the laptop now, can’t seem to find anything I want and just get by with the iPad

Exactly, it’s not a replacement.
I use mine for email, kindle, couple of games, Facebook, and Readly (magazine app). It’s easy to travel around with and convenient for taking to work.
I can really recommend the Readly app, £7.99 a month for as many magazines you want. SWMBO uses it and both the kids and their log ones still come under that price.

Had a MacBook for 7 years, and enjoyed it for the most part. The problem is, there’s a lot of great software for Mac OS X, and also for Windows, but often there’s that one piece of software that just isn’t made for both.
The one thing I really disliked about OS X is Finder. For such an integral part of the operating system, I find it very unintuitive and quirky. Permissions was another thing I wasn’t used to dealing with in Windows, but had to in OS X.
After the MacBook, decided to get a slightly more affordable Samsung laptop. This is a 2012 Windows computer that is still running today with no slowing down. It has a metal shell, is the size of a MacBook Air and light as a feather, and does anything I throw at it.
At the same time, my wife seems to have constant little nagging issues with her 2013 MacBook Pro. I haven’t looked back after switching back to Windows. A lot of people didn’t like the Windows 8 interface. I loved it, and enjoy Windows 10 even more. I don’t think many people are aware of how much you can customize your Windows experience. I found the Mac to be more restrictive in that sense. (That’s the same reason I use Android instead of iOS.)

It is also something that has been on my mind for a while as I refuse to even press the power button on the laptop these days, just to suffer in front of Windows 10 and get nowhere.
There are times though, that I need something more than the iPad. Most notably, sending image files for print, where the original has not been “adjusted” for the iPad’s storage and display.

The fact is that the same limitations I found with my iPad I also found with my Samsung Android tablet. These are phone OS's on large screen devices. Neither gave me the PC capabilities that I needed. I resisted the Surface Pro line for a long time and finally bought a second hand Surface Pro 3 with an i7 processor. Like I stated, once I got used to the fact that literally anything I was doing on my desktop I could do on my tablet I was hooked. That's the difference between a device that has a mobile OS and one that has a desktop OS.

I think the pen also lifts the experience allowing the precision fingers and foamy stylus things lack. Working with things like Excel spreadsheets is just so much easier without having to constantly zoom in and out.

Hi Team,
Just thought I'd feed back on what's been a very interesting discussion.
I've decided to go for a Mac.
In the end I just fancied a change, and there aren't any compelling reasons not to try something different. I fancy learning something new.
My peripherals worked immediately so no problems there.
The two things I need to find replacements for are:
1) A desktop note taking system like OneNote (which doesn't do synch to the internet as that's not allowed).
2) Some sort of USB multi port docking station which expands the number of USB ports.
Thanks for all the advice, and if you've any tips on the two migration challenges I have let me know.
