Recent change with internet provider in my building - setup tech said over 50% of home computers are Mac's

I wanted to be creative or enjoy using a computer - changed to Mac 10 years ago and . More and more desktop programs are going on-line and less need for Windows (I had to run parallels or boot camp before). Depending on your usage, a "really nice" Chromebook or iPad might be all you need.

Think of being able to us Apple Pay or Google Pay on B/S/T.

Another vote for Mac.
My Mac has a fusion hard drive, and genuinely boots up fully in 10 seconds. It hasn’t slowed down, and other than a couple of minor crashes when woken from sleep, just requiring a restart, has been faultless.

Exactly, cheap and nasty. They are offering them cheap to students, shame really.

They do have a nice built in rubber handle though ! [emoji23]

Couldn't agree more, I basically wanted a laptop that I could create emails, word documents and spreadsheets. I could probably do this on any device but decided to be flash and bought a MacBook Air a couple of years ago. Increased RAM and internal memory because I wanted it to be quicker than blinking. Again not that I needed it. Still using the Mac Air and really enjoy it. Design wise it also looks beautiful. Moved my mum onto MacBooks too as she was destroying laptops. Never have I seen someone work so hard, constantly on a laptop. She was a Deputy head and AST, then advisor to special needs schools, before retiring. In 20 years she used 7 Windows based laptops. Each lasted no more than a year and a half. The MacBook is still running. Her favourite feature was the backlit keyboard, useful when working in the middle of the night.

I suggest you answer the Counts questions, then come back and ask for recommendations.

I've a Window's computer for 'home' use - read; gaming powerhouse also suitable for photo/video editing if required. I also have a Macbook Retina (base model) for work/travel. The Mac doesn't do anything my main computer can't do with respect to word processing and suchlike so it's a great tool to start off work in work and continue on my powerhouse if needs be.

2015 model, still working fine though battery life has taken a recent dip. Quick enough for the majority of tasks.

I have a gaming PC I built myself, water cooled, oodles of RAM, SSDs in Raid, in a massive case and two screens running Win 10. Because I only have moderate funds (I saved for 5 years for it), I like playing around with software, hardware performance is very important, don't care about showing off, everything from browsing to gaming.

I have a base model Surface Pro 4 because I wanted a Tablet computer not a big phone. Moderate funds and I had a few special offers/vouchers I could use, I like playing with software, hardware performance was important (see what do I use it for), had to look good at work. Browsing, consuming media, working on complex Excel spreadsheets/Access, kids can play on it (drawing games etc.) taking notes and and adding notes in meetings (needed to lay flat to avoid barrier effect), wanted a proper pen rather than a stylus. LOVE IT! especially with OneNote integration it's a tool from the gods - I write much quicker than I type and the ability to write notes/make sketches on documents and then pick them up on any device is spiffing.

I also have small Fire tablet (Big Phone) and a cheap netbook for the kids to play on/do homework on.

I have nothing against Macs/Chromebooks/Linux they just don't do what I want at the price I can pay.

Mine sounds similar - self-built, water cooled, bags of RAM... SSD but only the one so no RAID... Fair case on it too (NZXT S340 Black)... it's a beasty and has shown absolutely no dip in performance after 2 and a half years. Only thing I want to do now is change my MOBO. The one I opted for, despite looking incredible, has issues running RAM in SLi and there are better out there.

+1 for the Surface though. Great performers and the pen with them is so much nicer than a run-of-the-mill stylus.

Wow - this is much more split than I expected. Thanks very much for your feedback everyone. Looks like there's no clear winner, although it seems people that have switched from Windows to Mac have been pleased with the switch on the whole.

How much money do you have? Money is not an issue at all. I'm selecting a rebuild for work and can choose either (lucky boy!)
Do you like playing around with software? Yes.
How important is hardware performance? Extremely - this is the thing I really dislike about my Windows system now - it's super slow, getting slower and I have zero idea how to fix it.
How much do you want to show off to your peers? Not at all. Showing off really not my thing.
What will I use it for? My favourite things are OneNote; Powerpoint and then some web collaboration like zoom.

Also:

I live at the top of a MASSIVE hill (13%) and need to cycle home with my laptop every day - so weight is an issue.
I have a beautiful keyboard which uses USB and I want to use that.
I have a trackball mouse and I want to use that. That's USB too.

How's that?
