Learning to shave with the Feather Artist Club

Wonderful shave today, best so far I think. I loaded up my brush quite heavily today and decided to do 3 passes to see if I could get as near to BBS as I could without irritating my skin. The only area I go ATG is my neck where my hair grows in all directions and luckily I don't seem to get any irratation there anyway. The rest I did WTG and 2x XTG in different directions, the result was probably as close I am am ever going to get, I think unless you go ATG you will struggle to get absolute BBS but this is more than good enough for me. It was shave number 9 with the Schick and still feels smooth and sharp, a great blade for a great razor.

Today was shave number 5 with the Feather Pro and it was so smooth that if I didn't check the skin of my face I wouldn't be able to tell I was actually shaving. I'm getting BBS every time with the Feather Artist Club so I try to use a DE razor in between shaves with the FAC.

I use a brush scuttle and it's lovely building the warm lather on the face. I find that taking the time to work the lather on the face helps to get great shaves.

Something I remember the other day and I forgot to post here.....the things I did when I went through the learning curve to shave with a SR.

My goal was to learn to shave in 100 shaves.
I only shaved with a SR if I had the time, if it took 1 hour I was OK with that.
I videoed the shaves to review my technique.... I did that for a while and it helped
I watched videos on YouTube of SR shaving.
I tought myself to use both hands from day one

Day 23 - Feather Artist Club SS with Feather Professional

After a work week with DE shaves it was back to the AC, loaded with a Feather Professional on its third use. Two passes and no touch ups. First pass felt great, second pass is more troublesome. I wanted to be kind to my skin and skipped the touch ups. The result was okay. Not so close as i want, but I didn't reach for that today. No irritations.

Had another exceptional shave again this morning, 3 passes but this time shaved my neck in a sort of downward curve that picked up all the remaining hair either side of my Adam's apple on my final pass. I'm really not sure now whether I ever will get into proper straight razor shaving as I can't imagine that I would surpass what I am currently getting from the Artist Club.

10 uses (8x2 pass, 2x3 pass) on the Schick and still going strong. Although it seems to be out of stock everywhere in UK now which is a bit of a worry, just hope it's only a temporary thing.

I've not picked up my DE for about a month now although I will keep it as a backup when time is short. I am currently furloughed so have all the time in the world to enjoy my shaves with the AC. I really look forward to my shower/shave routine, I stick Radio 3 on and unwind without any time constraints, this may well change after lockdown ends but I really hope it doesn't.

Day 69 - Feather Artist Club SS with Feather Super (3)

Nice shave. Sunday. No rush. No running water from the bath. I took my time and thoroughly enjoyed my shave. No cuts or nicks. A little bit patchy in one spot, but other spots are as close as you like.

WTG/XTG/ATG and a big smile.

Day 24 - Feather Artist Club SS with Feather Professional

First pass, as always, went very well. Second pass okay as best. A few weepers and a few spots was not as close as I wanted. And I don't like Feather Professional blades. Never liked them in any SE and I don't like them in the AC. Next shave with the AC, probably next weekend, I'm going back to the KAI Protouch MG.

Are you saying it can only get better for me with the Professional Super and Shick Proline?

The Feather Pro is the only AC blade I've tried and I find it very good, it actually got better from 4th shave.
For me Feather Professional never been better than "okay". The best blades for me in an SE, in every SE I've tried, is KAI Protouch MG and Schick Proline. Feather Pro Super is a beast, but has been better for me than Professional.

Extreme sharpness is ephemeral!
It's my opinion that all straight razors both traditional and Feather AC & DX work better with a thinner lighter lather, they don't work well with a thick rich creamy lather it tends to slow down the slickness required, you could use a nice pre-shave then lightly lather over the top with a thinner lather.

Day 70 - Feather Artist Club SS with Feather Super (4)

I wonder why I get on with the Super so well. Another comfortable, nick-free shave. Mostly extremely close, with a few patchy bits. I am pretty fussy though. This is a more than acceptable shave.

WTG/XTG/ATG and can only really criticise the area to the side of my mouth, on the jawline, on the dominant side. I may need to find a new hand position to get this bit a bit closer.

Day 25 - Feather Artist Club SS with KAI Protouch MG

A bonus shave with the AC today as I'm working from home. Popped in a fresh KAI Protouch MG and performed one of my best shaves so far. Two passes and a few touch up strokes. Result is good, not BBS everywhere but I could take this shave and go to work any day. I blame the Feather Professional blade for the last bad shaves. KAI is much smoother and feel as sharp as the Professional.

Have you tried shaving with the opposite hand? I do that going XTG
Hmm. With the WTG pass I am effectively ambidextrous, and very comfortable using my non-dominant hand. With the XTG/ATG passes, I am doing the whole thing with my dominant hand. Perhaps I should try the non-dominant hand on that part. It would feel a little risky, but I guess that can be overcome.
