Learning to shave with the Feather Artist Club

Day 56 - Feather Artist Club SS with Kai Mild unguarded

Third shave on this blade, I think, and it definitely feels a little smoother to me. That's the first time I've noticed that really.

Three passes WTG/XTG/ATG and very nice it was too. I've become much more confident going ATG on the non-dominant side above the jawline, between the cheek and the side of my mouth, and I found that it was easy to just move across a little to also shave the skin just below my lower lip, on the non-dominant side. I'm not so confident in the corresponding area on the dominant side of my face, so the shave there is not quite so good. I'm not sure I need this particular part to be quite so close on a daily basis anyway.

My daily shaves are now into the realms of what a good or very good DE shave would be like. Moustache area is exceptional, and beyond what I can achieve with a DE. Cheeks are awesome. Neck is very good indeed. Jawline is very good indeed.

What remains are the few bits where I still haven't fully worked out the best strokes. Dominant-side, under the jawline just below my ear... I really need some east-to-west movement here, but can't quite work it out. Dominant side, just to the side of my mouth, just above the jaw/chin.

Otherwise, things are looking great! I love it.

Day 15 - Feather Artist Club SS with Schick Proline

A proper lather today. First pass as usual, and the speed is okay. Second pass and touch ups takes time. But the end result is good. Cheeks and moustache area very good. Close and problem how to attack. The neck is also good on most parts, but there are a few spots where I need to shave from right to left to get bbs and I still haven't figured out how to reach those areas without cutting myself. The chin also causes some problems, but result was okay. Overall, I'm very satisfied with my progress. The result today is good enough even with a DE and I feel it's getting better every day. If I want to shave with a straight on workdays I need to be faster, but, hey, I'm still a rookie. Now a full workweek is coming up so I 'll be back with the first pass with the AC and finish it up with a DE. Also, tomorrow I' ll try a new blade.

The way I get round that problem ( for my pattern of growth) is a slicing action. The description sounds worse than it actually is!. I do it during the ATG or touch up phase. Good skin stretching is a MUST! Start the stroke S to North and sweep the blade to the E or W as required. I suppose it makes the edge behave like a slant in that it slices through the hair at a different angle. This method usually works for me.

Edit: Sweeping might be a better description

I often use that approach on my cheeks / jaw on the second pass but haven't the bottle for it in / around the Adams apple.

Hi Guys.
Hope you don't mind me contributing. I have had a feather ac Kamisori for about 3 years and it is by far my favourite razor.
Perseverance is the key. When I first started with a feather I nearly gave up a few times, but persevered and soon mastered razor and technique.
I get the closest shaves of all my razors now.

The more the merrier! And of course it's great to hear from someone who has more experience that we newbies do!

Thanks! I know I've got to do something like that and it's getting better for each shave.

Well I seem to have hit the buffers with my shaves at the moment. Friday's shave with the Schick Proline felt rough and I put it down to the blade not sitting in the razor properly but today's shave felt a bit rough too so I have binned the blade and will try a new one next shave.

More worryingly my face has started to develop some irritation and blemishes. I normally have very good skin and after my first 8 shaves or so my skin looked better than ever but since then it's got worse, the remnants of nicks I've had don't help. I am wondering if I am get too close now, I'm certainly BBS on my cheeks and that is where my blemished are.

I will see how my face looks tomorrow and decide whether to go back to my DE until my skin recovers, skip another days shaving or use the AC with just 2 passes and not go ATG at all.

Day 57 - Feather Artist Club SS with Kai Mild unguarded

There's no question I can shave with this combination. The question is whether I want to. It definitely gets me closer than a guarded blade, with less effort. However, I am not yet as confident as I would be with the guarded blade, and the results are very slightly more aggressive on the face.

Tomorrow is the first working day of the week this week, so I'm thinking I might go back to the DX+guarded combination.

That said, 3 passes, WTG/XTG/ATG and a very good close shave was had. Only one real area that was unsatisfactory this time, which is the area to the side of my mouth down to the jawline on the dominant side. I simply need a different tactic for this area, and I will try to resolve this on my next shave.
