Keeping your interest up

I have my final razor (Feather), which was one of my early purchases, which was sold, which was replace with a lot of big guns, which was eventually bought again once I realised I was chasing my own tail. I have one or two more brushes I have to have and then I will just get the odd soap/balm/smelly here and there.
Interest is maintained by having to shave every now and then.

The BBS-1 "ruined" DE razor acquisitions for me.
No one razor is the best for everyone - if there was such a thing we'd all just buy that and in most cases, not counting collecting, be done with it.
After having gone through 200+ DE razors it did in the end come out as 'the winner' and the razor that I probably use 40% of the time these days.
The remaining 60% are used for razors to mix it up with - SE, Carts, and other DEs.
Realistically I don't use 250-300 of my razors and 50+ of my brushes and 'collecting' has cooled down significantly for me.
If I wasn't so lazy and procrastinating about it they would all be sold off by now as I only intend to keep about 30-or-so razors and 10-or-so brushes.
I still love shaving - it's just the acquisition disorder that have left me.

Sobering question and thread, Wayne.
I have spent a considerable amount and as was said above, (much of) the thrill is in the chase. Part of that is chasing a perfect shave, but also and increasingly new, "better" and fancier products. So function yes, but aesthetics increasingly. The limited capacity of brush and razor artisan brands like Varlet, Paladin and Wolfman feeds the never ending chase rather than the demand I'm afraid. And forums really don't help a floppy spined consumer like yours truly. Our grandfathers managed just fine with a single Gillette razor and a single soap...
All that said, shaving has become a welcome escape from reality, meditative me-time, something I feel I master in a world of, after all, more challenging and demanding things and pressure. Having a family calls for one's presence at home for the most part, as their families do for my real-life friends, so the low threshold for socialising virtually is also a factor. Plus, I enjoy my presence in here with you lot
These two paras in combination respond well to how and why my interest is kept up. One needs a hobby and at least for men this usually entails acquiring stuff (the sum of vices is constant, it is said, or to paraphrase, the sum of spending on "vices" is constant) but I could definitely put some more aside for a rainy day. I'm starting to reach saturation in gear, though, so it might be time.

I like what I have, and I've enjoyed the learning and banter on the forums. I've realized that you're not going to find the "magic" razor and once you've found a razor that gives you a BBS every time you use it, you should stop looking and spending. I have enough razors, soaps, and blades to see me through my dottering years.

My interest definately waned a little while ago and although it was largely due to "life taking over" for a bit, it definately didn't help that i bought a mongoose that completely killed my RAD. I then went on a bit of a brush journey, that may have ended up the same way after recently buying a Simpsons silvertip chubby.
I am still interested though as i like to see what's on offer and to take part in the amazing pass-arounds that the wonderful people of these forums set up. This keeps me interested as you never know.... There may just be something better around the corner.
Also, i get bored of soaps very quickly so I'm always buying and selling them which keeps up the interest.

Gosh! I've been into this for about three years now and had a period of really quite frantic collecting ... more recently, it's been a case of streamlining. Initially, that scattergun of "collect everything" changed to specific types of razor - ASR 1912s & Gillette Techs - and that in itself provided focus. Soaps, too, deciding that purity was my key concern. Aftershaves, that the classics were for me. Oh, there was Attars, too.
I guess we like collecting ...
Interest is kept up as these are lovely objects and it's always nice to talk about razors with other folks. To say I've only shaved twice since the end of January, I'm largely not shaving at the moment ... yet my interest in razors and their paraphernalia is maintained.
Once you've set on something to collect, and once you think you've seen it all ... there's always yet one more that you've never seen.

On the plus side I've recently grown a pair of cavalry whiskers (large sideburns that meet the moustache in the middle) and I've had to alter my shaving style quite a bit, so that's kept me engaged. Not sure if I'd recommend it...
