Interest in aviation

Thank you, this was a fantastic period in aviation, it must have helped when we were small boys and stood outside looking up into the skies, my boyhood plane was the Vulcan, I swear that the ground shook as it skimmed the roof of my house.
I can only image what that was like as we never had that type of plane in our inventory.

The closest to that for me would be watching the CWH Mynarski memorial Lancaster at our local airport.

The Canadian built Lancaster Mk Xs were powered by American Packard built RR Merlin engines. These engines were more powerful than the British built RR Merlins. That was a sound to remember for me.

A long range bomber may not have been a necessary investment for 1950s Canada, the Vulcan could drop bombs 4000 miles away and still get back.

This interest was fuelled with books. We bought the Observers Books series on many subjects which included aeroplanes, a photograph for each page and a description, we studied these as if they were going to be a school exam subject

I lived and have worked near to the (now gone) AVRO factory at Woodford and went to the Airshow every year. Watched the Vulcan display many times and they often went overhead other times.

AVRO Canada was a progressive company and the planned then cancelled CF-105 Arrow was a very futuristic design that could have been spectacular.

Yes, the Avro Arrow could have been spectacular. Without the more powerful Orenda Iroquois ever being installed IICR it managed a hair under twice the speed of sound at 50,000 feet. It is a sad page in our aviation history.

Boeing has a propulsion engineering and assembly facility in North Charleston, maybe a mile from me, sometimes they shake the house! Incredibly loud, but cool. 👍

Flying? I used to fly a lot in my youth, but not with a plane. :p:

If it's of any interest, there is an AVRO Heritage Museum in the middle of the new huge housing estate that occupies the site of the former AVRO Woodford airfield / factory. The museum is inside the former airfield fire station building.

They have a Vulcan on display outside

Thank you for that, it was news to me and looks like it is worth a visit.

Certainly is of interest to me. I only wish I was in a position to visit the museum.
