I think I'm understanding this a lot more recently

For me its never been about finding perfection its more about trying things out,
Only thing I want to try is a gem razor as I've never tried it (will make a thread about it), apart from the gem I've pretty much tried the lot in my eyes

It can be a bit frustrating hobby if you don't know anyone in real life who's into wet shaving too

so you can't even try out things and borrow them before buying

Btw it's not just with this hobby,
another hobby I was into for years I had to get things myself and learn myself too, which I suppose makes it a worthwhile journey in the end but can be a bit frustrating

May I recommend the GEM Micromatic and GEM PTFE blades. There are instructions on how to use this model.

For a lot of people shaving isn't a hobby. It isn't for me, using a DE, soap and a brush makes a mundane task enjoyable but that's about it.

For something entirely different, my cheap Sally’s DE fell apart because it was made of pot metal. I discovered that eBay sold vintage blade holders. The antique lover in me took over, and now you know the rest of the story.

Forums are a wonderful source for many things, but we can have many motivations.

I never took up collecting DE razors. I tried a broad range of them, modern and vintage, but nothing really clicked. I still have a few stuffed away in a drawer and they haven’t seen daylight for yonks. My daily shave remains my Mach3 with a GFT faux ivory handle. I do, however, keep a loaded Merkur 38C and Gillette fat handle ball-tip Tech nearby to quench the urge to use a DE which comes over me from time to time. My wet shaving love remains badger and boar shaving brushes of which I have 30. I have ventured into the realm of synthetics, but nothing has turned my crank yet. English shaving creams remain a passion and lately I’ve found some soft Italian soaps from the Italian Barber which have been a pleasant surprise. Hard soaps don’t really interest me. One of my other loves is my Moss scuttle to keep my brush and lather warm between applications, but I’ve never seen the point of lathering in a bowl, so it’s face-lathering only for me.

I don't have any real interest in collecting razors or soaps etc, more an interest in effective shaving, as i get hairy quite quickly and tolerated decades of running cartridge / electric razors over my face each day to give mediocre and rough results.

Have bought a few DE razors, because they are relatively cheap, and have pretty much settled on Merkur Progress (for its flexibility), Merkur 20c (for its gentle, safe results when rushed or travelling) and a Gillette Fusion 5 (for quick shaves in the shower and finishing off awkward areas sometimes)

My attention nowadays is pretty much fixed on improving skin and beard prep / lathering before shaving, as i think it reaps much more rewards than razor / blade experimentation does.

I still think DE shaving is worth the extra time and effort overall, as for me a cartridge shave becomes stubbly in a few hours, but a DE shave will stay smooth much longer.

With GEM blades, you're mostly stuck with the Personna PTFE blades. They're both quite sharp and fairly smooth, at least for me.
The Micromatic (an OC) is among the more aggressive GEM razors, but quite manageable.
