I recently moved to Nassau County, Long Island. There’s a huge cultural difference in driving habits here, just 20 miles from where I lived in Queens, NYC. In the city we've been conditioned to a 25 mph speed limit on most local streets. Occasionally there is a 30 mph limit on secondary roads. Here on Long Island, speed limits are 35+ mph; and as a result people drive sooo fast on secondary and tertiary roads! Further, it seems “stop” signs are merely a suggestion. Maybe I’m just getting old…

There is becoming a practice here where two drivers are arriving at the stop sign at the same time. One will just keep driving and never slow. Another similar practice is, if you are stopped the other driver just keeps driving. One last observation, if you are the second car behind the front, you feel enabled to not have to wait again. I guess they feel they have paid their dues...LOL!!
No, you are not getting old. You probably have lived long enough to know someone who was injured or killed in a car accident.

There is a system in Portugal that has cut speeding significantly.
Imagine an open road out of the towns, signs are placed which warn motorists that over the next few miles they will encounter speed cameras, if a speeding car triggers the camera the motorist does not get a speeding fine. The camera is connected to a traffic light 250 yards down the road which turns red and stays on red for 2-3 minutes, not only for the speeder but for all other motorists and many will shout abuse at the speeder questioning many things about him that he might hold sacred and they would recommend a good optician.
If motorists drive through the red light they are photographed and fined substantially.

Phoenix Arizona is known for bad drivers. They speed, run red lights, and kill innocent people.
Ad to that Text & Talking on phones. That is how I got a medical problem it will take 200K to fix.
Lady who rear ended me had 25K insurance.

Each province and territory in Canada has it's own set of rules and regulations for motorists. You want an eye opener look up what Stunt Driving will get you under the Ontario HTA (highway traffic act) which applies to all roads in the province including in cities. The province is currently trying to pass changes that will really increase the penalties.
Should you be stopped for Stunt Driving and they find that you are Driving While Impaired from drugs, alcohol or lack of sleep that is another charge they can add.
Unfortunately, there are not enough police to really crack down in these types of behaviour.

You can have all the laws, regulations, etc. With few Cops enforcing them, your in a free for all. Big City near me, Phoenix, Arizona is down 1,000 COPS. They use to have 140 Motorcycle Cops doing Traffic Enforcement. Today about 26.
