How many shaves does it take to truly understand your razor?

First impressions do count a lot, but I know that sometimes you just need a few shaves to dial things in. I let myself be put off by a tech after one use and wished I'd had another few goes before passing it on. In the other hand I knew the standard was a keeper after its first use.

I think it is more than just getting to know the razor. As most of us on the forum have far too many permutations when it comes to the shave. Too many razors, too many blades and too many soaps/brushes. We seldom use the same combination twice. Can you remember the last time you had a really good satisfying shave? The one where your skin felt magnificent with no irritation The shave when everything just clicked.
Well, I bet you didn't replicate that combination on your next shave did you?
That is part of our problem right there. Our Fathers didn't have that luxury they found what worked for them and stuck with it.

How many shaves?.... All of them. There's something unique in the way each one shaves. Kind of like grandchildren, love them all but each has their own characteristics that make them special and you have to watch for it everytime.

I'm of the opinion that if it doesn't click on the first shave, then it gonna be hard to convince myself to keep it.
ATT S2, iKon X3, Asylum, PILS, Feather, Cobra, Mongoose, Alumigoose all just didn't feel "up there" with the best for me. I gave them all a fair crack of the whip, but sometimes that first shave decides it for me...

Yeah... This is a good point. First impressions do matter.

There is something to be said for using any product -- hardware or software -- for an extended period of time to learn its characteristics. It took me exactly one shave with my Schick Type G to master it. It was so smooth and the angle was so intuitive. Every other razor DE or SR takes a few shaves before I figure how to get the most from it. With a new DE I do find it better to use a blade I am familiar with...eg. Astra SP or Gillette Silver Blue.

I have so many razors that it does become confusing making decisions. I enjoy all of them but treasure only a couple. I would shave the tops of my toes to keep the enjoyment coming if only I could reach em.
