How many of you have no friends?

Ok. A little update. Not only do I not have any friend or job, but now I'm facing getting a divorce. I can't blame her. I thought I was fragile before yesterday. Now I'm a complete and total mess.
Man that fecking sucks. You might consider yourself to not have any friends in the 'real' world but it may not be of much consolation at this moment in time but here to speak on behalf of others I am sure we all consider you to be one of our friends.

Please, take care of yourself and we are always here to listen.

As other have said there's people on here who will listen. If you feel like it, start a thread somewhere and I'm sure you'll get responses. If you'd prefer you could put it in the locker room or use PMs.

I too have been where you are now and was a complete mess also, it will take time, lots of time but you will come out the other side intact.
Don't be afraid or embarrassed to seek help because it's hard to see things straight without another pair of eyes.
I found friends some comfort but they were not trained professionals so if you come to a point where you are not able to cope please seek out professional help, go and speak to your doctor who will put you in touch with the right people.
27 years is a long time so don't expect to be back to your old self within a couple of weeks, it will take time, but you will get there.

In music circles people generally recommend the "rock 'n roll breakup". This consists of being as irrational as you like, talking a lot to friends, going out and having a drink with your buddies (but don't become an alcoholic in the process...) and hanging out in jazz clubs where you can bore the barman/woman and listen to the blues.

On another note, do check out the Stages of Loss online. It usually goes Denial, Bargaining (if this, if that...), Anger, mixture of Anger and Sadness, and eventually Acceptance. You pretty much need to go through all these stages to come out of it OK, and it helps to recognise they're happening.

All the best.....

Ouch, crap, what have you. Very sorry to hear, and I can only echo the sentiments in the preceding posts. Haven’t been through it myself, but went to a group thing where one of the participants was in the process of a break up, well over retirement age. It’s tough, life itself may feel at stake, as it’s everything one has known for so many years. Hang in there, man.

Thanks for all of your kind words of encouragement. I really do appreciate it. @halvor is correct. 27 years is a long time. I keep going from total panic mode to a more lucid state where I realize that there have been many times I couldn't stand her and just wanted out. What makes this difficult is that I'm not the one who took the initiative to say to her "it's over." If I had, I might feel a little better about this. I guess in the back of my mind I thought that I would be able to figure out how to reconcile things and make things better. But I've been too wrapped up in my own funk for years to make any attempt at such a thing. And now there really isn't a way back. It's gone on for way too long. It's going to have to happen. And yes, I'm checking my insurance right now to see what they will cover and will start a search to find someone professional to talk to. I have to because there really isn't anyone I can turn to who I am still close enough to to lean on and have those conversations. I really don't have many friends. And I'm the one who allowed that to happen. Again, thanks for everyone's support. It means a lot.

Professional help is always good but also consider local support groups. These are often cheap, or free in some cases, and speaking with those that have been, or are, in similar experiences can also be beneficial.

I think that's a very good idea. Group therapy or other similar groups can be cheaper and it can be powerful to bare ones soul inside a supportive group of people. Talking to a single person isn't the only way to do this, though it's what most people tend to imagine when you need it.

I agree this this. I retired from a drug and alcohol treatment center where they held group counseling sessions. Most of the time clients would open up more in a group than they would on a one to one session.

Relationships, employment... life itself is all transitory. Five minutes after you've reached room temperature, most people will have forgotten you ever existed. In the end, we all join the billions of nameless souls who have walked this planet. Cheer up. It will all be over soon. In the meantime, there isn't a guy on this forum who doesn't have time to listen and commensurate. :)
