It would be difficult to argue that blade holders, of endless variety, were not and are not now built with a purpose and that purpose to remove hair as close as possible.
As far as eye candy goes, no more ornate design was ever produced as the GEM Damaskeene Lather catchers. Further back, makers produced beautiful etchings on their straight razor offerings. Appearance matters. As my uncle used to say, "it only costs a little more to go first class.
Lest we forget, the Gillette Pocket Edition from the teens.
