That's my understanding of it too. NATO straps work with fixed bars + can be easily lengthened to be worn over the top of utility clothing.I have a theory about NATO straps that a piece of common wisdom about them is untrue, or at least misunderstood. If is oft said that the NATO strap came about so that your watch wouldn't be lost if a spring bar popped, however all British military-issued watches of the time had fixed bars. My theory is that the NATO strap's design was driven by needing a strap that could be passed through bars that were brazed into the watch case, not concern for a bar popping out.
This is the main thing that's stopped me trying one of the MN straps, my favourite watch has fixed strap bars so NATOs are the only ones that work with it.
I have always found NATO's a bit fiddly to put on and wear. The MN straps are the easiest and most comfortable i have ever worn. The only slight downside is you often need to retighten them after a few hours of wearing, but its a moments work to slide the buckle a few mm tighter.
