New incoming….

The vintage refrigerator that came with the old house died over the weekend while I was away. Yes, it smelled…lol!

Shopping today for a replacement for grandchildren’s drink and ice cream refrigerator taught me why to old one might have passed, heat!

The incoming refrigerator is rated 30-110. So, if you’re shopping for a refrigerator for the shop or garage, there are some designed for such s purpose.

Yes, that’s good advice. My daughter and son-in-law bought such a refrigerator for their garage. Although their garage is part of the house’s structure, and thus relatively warm compared to a stand alone garage, it is not insulated. The kids went to a number of vendors in their area in search of such a unit but came up short every time. When they finally had the presence of mind to seek my advice I hooked them up with my long time ”uncle” in the appliance business (my friend Lenny has been selling appliances for over 40 years) who came to their rescue. Long-winded backstory, but the point is, yes, specially designed refrigerators are indeed a thing. Don’t waste your time buying a standard fridge for the garage or other uninsulated structures.

I had quite a time finding a freezer that was rated for use in outbuildings (my garage) in the UK. One of the few manufacturers offering one is Beko, which is a Turkish company. Maybe I'm just getting old, but it seems harder to find things nowadays.

IMO, this is because very little (relatively speaking) nowadays matches the quantities of quality goods as was customary in the past. Nowadays, people overwhelmingly seem to seek out inexpensive, lower quality products over the higher quality and more expensive option.

Looking back, I’ve had two freezers, a compact refrigerator, and now this one recently with all being used outside the part of the house that was being heated or cooled. It never occurred to me the cause.

Now I’m reminded that the home warranty policy is only for refrigerators inside the home.

I’m also learning the cost of running may exceed $300 per year. All this time I thought the failure was due to age.

I bought a Beko freezer a few months ago from Curry's which is suitable for outhouse use. It's in the kitchen, but when I saw it as an option I thought it handy to have the option of moving it to the cellar at a future date as a back-up freezer as I'm thinking of having the kitchen moved to a larger room in the house and may get a fridge-freezer.
