Flu Jab

I had mine yesterday. I’m 72 years old and have a flu jab every year. I’ve also had the jab for pneumonia and shingles along with other jabs. I grew up in the time and in a place where there were no vaccines for measles, rubella, mumps, chicken pox and other common childhood diseases and I’ve had them all and several more than once; I wouldn’t care to repeat it. My wife is not an anti-vaccer, but she refuses to have a yearly flu jab on the grounds that it’s a hit and miss proposition every year that they’ve identified the right strain of flu. Ironically, she hasn’t come down with the flu in recent memory. I think one of the things that propels me to have the annual flu jab is that my grandfather died of complications from the Spanish flu in 1918 at the age of 31; this was after surviving 4 years in WW1.

That’s a good point re Spanish Flu - the estimated global death count was in excess of 20 million - far greater than the number of casualties from the First World War.

Had my first free one (old age!) last year and it made so bad I needed a day off work. Not going to bother this year...

In Greece it costs 6 euros.

I did it last year, now I have a cold, so I will wait some weeks to do it.

We did it with my wife and daughter last year. No problems.

Recommended.

Got snail mail, free flu shot for the elderly, I am 65. Using Google I found out that the expected success rate for the vaccine is about 60 % in a young and healthy person if the match between vaccine and the type of flu is perfect. In the elderly vaccine will not be as effective. But if getting the flu shot and still catching the flu then vaccine will supposedly take the edge off resulting in less risk for complications.

Had it a couple of weeks ago, work were offering put vouchers for Boots. Mrs is NHS so they come around and you are expected but she prefers to have it anyway. No I’ll effects, I e had full on flu before, not a bad cold but full on. Horrible experience and it was over Christmas and ended up with a chest infection. My advice for what it’s worth is go for it, yes it will only cover you for four strains of flu but it’s better than nothing.

I get a flu shot every year.
It’s mandated by my employer (large health care system here in USA), with exemptions given only for very specific reasons.

I had the flu about ten years ago but Man Colds I have had plenty no shots available for those though :)

Extreme sharpness is ephemeral!
I'm 60 and just a while back I asked my doctor and he advised me not to have it, he said that you are healthy and not at risk, so I accept his advice, saying that I have never had the Flu in all my life, yes I have an occasional cold but never caught the Flu, I'm always suspect of people when they say they have the Flu when to me it appears to be a cold.
