I must of heard someone call it the same as I also adopted it and refer to the tv remote as the doofer. Or use to before youtube came about.

The doofers (with an ess) can be the dogs bollix (regional accent) but if the doofers (in this case, batteries) have run out in the zapper, then that's hard cheese, or in other words, a load of bollix.

Here in the 1970s on the east coast I was introduced to the phrase/s Chummy and Chummy Oater, the last spelled phonetically. They seem to be the equivalent of Doofer. It can be a culture shock moving about this country but interesting. At the same time I had to learn a new language too, navalese.
