DE shaving for the non-enthusiast?

Myself in a nutshell for shaving is the whole thing has to be enjoyable. That’s why I don’t mind spending money on the items. It’s a great experience every shave and I want to enjoy every part of it. From making the lather to inspecting my razor and then cleaning up and treating my skin. If I didn’t enjoy shaving I’d get an electric razor and just keep a designer stubble on the go. My whole consensus is if you don’t enjoy it don’t do it. 5 minute shave for a DE wet shaver doesn’t exist and that’s my honest belief. Many respects. J.

I like to enjoy my shaves a no way could I enjoy a 5 minute shave. Minimum of 40 minutes. Slower the better.
40 minutes is a lot but, having said that, if you enjoy it that's all that matters really. When I got into the hobby back in 2017 it quickly became apparent to me that some folks put all these rules on it. God forbid you don't load enough soap, you'd have to... SHOCK HORROR... go back to the puck! I mean that's just one of them, there's loads. I'm able to get my shave done within about 15 minutes personally but I also only shave WTG and a little bit of XTG on the neck, I don't do three passes and my skin can't handle ATG at all so I don't bother. I think you just have to sort of adjust things to work how you want them to, whether you're experienced or a beginner. You sort of figure out your own pace as you go.

For us wetshavers I think the perfect summary would be. ‘Mileage may vary’. And yeah 40 mins is a long time but if I can get longer I definitely will. I shave once a week and on certain occasions will have a shave if I need one. I.e. a meal or if Mrs fett demands I have one. But like I say I love wet shaving and it is a hobby of mine so I try and relax and lose myself within the world of shaving for that one day a week. Many respects gents. J.

I beg to differ, it takes me ten minutes on average and I'm sure I could cut that in half if I wasn't shaving my head too. Once the lather's there a DE is no slower than a cartridge.
Average 10 mins including the lather and cleaning of razor & brush?

Yep 10minute job for me, used to be around 30mins when I first started (DE). My first straight razor shave was around 45mins (2 passes) and I was sweating profusely!
Give it time, if it took 45mins to shave after years of experience I would throw in the towel, as my stubble would start growing before I finished :)

Yes. I can take a lot longer if I want to luxuriate in the whole ritual but assuming I'm just wanting to get the job done no problem. Face lathering with a wee squirt of cream or a shave stick and synthetic brush takes maybe a minute or two to get lather and once the brush is full it's mainly a matter of just slopping more on for another pass. Brush and razor get cleaned by being run under the tap, given a quick flick or two and then left to finish drying naturally. If I'm feeling particularly precious the brush gets a quick strop on a towel.

Honestly, I'm not knocking how complicated some people make the whole thing but the OP made it clear that he's looking for a way to remove stubble, not an excuse for me-time in the bathroom. There's nothing wrong with that, and sometimes I indulge in it myself, but more often than not it's just a shave and not an event.

Hello all, brand new to this forum.

I am very new to DE shaving. I started out as a kid with an electric razor, then about five years ago switched to cartridges. Dorco Pace 3 was my razor of choice, and then once I couldn't get them directly from their warehouse anymore, briefly tried Harry's.

Harry's felt a bit harsh on my neck, and so I decided to finally try out DE. I picked up a Feather Popular (which came with two feather blades), and put together my own sample pack: Derby, Parker, 7am, Voskhod, Rapira, Big Ben, all three Dorco options, and the Personna options (black and blue, I think).

It's been a few weeks, and I just cannot get a shave without causing massive damage. The whole right side of my neck looks like a burn victim, with the rest of my neck slowly accumulating wounds, and after shaving I'm in pain all day. So far I've tried Derby (irritates the most, but stubbornly kept using it for the "newbie friendly" reputation), Parker (actually had one great shave, then the second tore me apart), and Dorco reds (tried it today, shave was less painful, but not very close). Oh yeah, the very first was with the Feather. Face on fire for two days straight. That was before I picked up some aftershave, never used the stuff before.

My goal is to be able to shave on consecutive days if I have to, and not tear my skin off. I have sensitive skin and very thick and coarse beard. With a cartridge, I MUST allow two days off before my next shave, or else it will cause too much damage (ideally three or four). With DE so far, I've had to shave every other day because I just can't get a close shave, and it grows back in fast.

Now here's where I'll get some eye rolls: I don't want shaving to become a hobby. I'm trying it to save money, get less irritation than a cartridge (utter failure on this point), and to avoid certain companies. I'm not interested in brushes or bowls or expensive soaps or taking 20 minutes to shave. I respect it and the tradition behind it, but it's just not for me. If I can shower in five minutes, I'd better not be shaving for any more than that. My routine is this: Shower, then shave using hand-applied Barbasol aloe mixed with some water to make it slick, using two passes (across on cheeks an

Finish with Thayer's witch hazel. My thinking was that two passes should produce less irritation, but I find myself going over areas again in each pass.

Do the fine folks on this forum think that upping to three passes would help or hurt my irritation problems? Are the razors I've tried generally not good for extremely stiff beards? I'm close to giving up on this, but if there are things that I can do that conform to my goals (no brush, no bowl, as few accessories and products as possible), I would love some input. I've got a few shaves left in me before I end up going back to Norelco or something . . . .
